We are going away next week and so we hired a pet sitter. She came today and saw our "loon" coasters" on the coffee table, and all of our loons... wooden, cross stiched, ceramic and stuffed, and said, although she has never been out of Florida, she has loved loons ever since she saw "On Golden Pond". She is probably the first person I have spoken with that hasn't thought they were some type of "duck"!!
Anyway, it made me want to hear the tremolo, yodel and wail, so I went to a loon site and listened. All I can tell you is this......it is the most awesome sound I have ever heard from a living, breathing being. It has been so long since I have heard this in person. Truly a gift from God.
The first time I ever heard their call was at White Lake State Park in Tamworth, and I was about 13. Dad and I were walking down our dirt road from the campsite toward the office, just after dusk, when I first heard a loon. It was the wail. I asked Dad what it was and he said it was a loon, and I had no idea what a loon was, and thought instantly that it was a loony, as in a crazy something. I was scared for a long time. Later, I realized what a very special sound it was.
Just thought I would share this with you, as I am here in Central Florida, and thinking about what it is like up there right now. It is lovely here, windows and patio all opened up. Finally.
Stay warm, all.
