I was wondering if there was any part of the lake that was still safe (or good) for snowmobiling? The trails everywhere are pretty much bare, but I wouldn't mind coming up for a couple of days to enjoy the lake. I know there is open water in places, but is there anywhere safe?

Personally, I wouldn't risk it. Before the dusting of snow we got, the ice in a lot of spots was starting to get very dark. Now with the snowcover, its impossible to tell what the ice looks like.

20" of solid ice on Winter Harbor on Sunday, now with at least a little snow on it!

Most of the lake has over a foot of ice still. No snow on top means sleep late and wait until the sun warms up the top inch enough to lube the sliders

Just returned from a week out of town. When I left Paugus bay was a lot of Bob houses and at least a couple of trucks out on it. Today I noticed all the Bob houses are gone. Guess it might be time to stay off the ice?

I was on the lake yesterday, 3/14/2004 and there is plenty of ice every where. There were at least a dozen trucks and cars out there. Everywhere I stopped and asked there was at least 20" of ice. In Gilford the ice is still solid to shore. The only problem places are near ice circulators. With the cold this week there will be no melting. The lake is just getting good for fast riding. There are still some bumps that need to melt down, so it will be at least another week before that happens. This should be one of those years for riding into April.
