View Full Version : High Wind
We recorded a wind gust of 54 mph in West Alton just before 10 A.M. today. The tops are being blown right off the white caps. Here's an example of the waves.

Looks pretty peaceful over there.
When the sun's out here, the spray being blown off the whitecaps makes a momentary rainbow one foot high and 100 feet long.

Great shot Don.... Not good boating weather. I just looked at Snake Eyes and the waves are still really large out on the broads.
Looks like hot chocolate weather.

Sounds like November on Winnipesaukee!!
Great shot Don, thanks for sharing. I hear this Friday 11/05 is supposed to be real windy too with patches of snow around the north country & the rain ending in snow showers south of there.

This morning, forecasters in Maine told of increasing NW winds today up to  54 MPH (Same as DRH's highest reading on Wednesday).
Now that two lots next door (upwind) have been cleared of their biggest trees, I'm a little concerned for the big trees in my little woods. :(
Update at 9:45 AM:
It's sunny, and the spray from the whitecaps is being blown into 20-foot-high rainbow plumes 300-feet+ long. This may be the strongest wind this season (and maybe last season, too).
There's a 17-foot outboard out there, too -- not going very fast, and staying close to shore.

While on my lunch break here at work I decided to take a look see at the SNAKE EYES cam. There seems to be a bit of a chop on the broads today. To quote Jimmy Buffett, " The weather is here wish you were beautiful"

Glad to see you at least get a break for lunch. Thanks again to Island Girl for the great view of the Broads. Snake Eyes gives all of us "from away" a chance to see the lake every day all year round.

The wind is mostly from the WNW today, which is just enough of a change from Wednesday's NW wind to spare our West Alton shoreline from the big waves we had then. It's actually not too rough over here today, but out toward Wolfeboro it looks very rough. The Snake Eyes webcam is showing that the Broads is very rough too.
I don't have an accurate high wind gust figure today because our weather station's wind sensor is slightly blocked by trees in the WNW direction. Even so, we did record a gust of 41 mph today.

Thanks for sharing the picture...just goes to show you, no matter what is happening on the Lake it is still very beautiful!
I watched the boats flop around in the high winds at Newport Harbor RI this weekend, and thought of how it must have looked on Lake W. :look:

Good shot don, Is that a new deck?
Good shot don, Is that a new deck?
No, it's our next door neighbor's dock.

Thanks for the dramatic photo DRH. We are quite fortunate that we weren’t on the island for this crazy weather.
The wind was so ferocious that it blew a winched up dock on The Broads side of Rattlesnake Island parallel to the land.
Trying to get in contact with the owner to alert them. If it is left this way over the winter, they may not have a dock come springtime. :emb:
