My son hit a submerged rock in Lake Huron over the weekend and it took out all forward power in my Mercruiser Alpha One Gen II out drive. We have some reverse power but it doesn't act right. I will be back in Moultonborough in a couple of weeks.
Could someone give advice on the best place to take it in the lakes region for repair? We have insurance and I would like to get it repaired properly. Thanks a lot!

Might have just spun the propeller hub. Many Alphas are equipped with a sacrificial flo-torq II hub style prop. It might just need a new Derlin sleeve.

I was hoping for just a simple propspin in the flo-torq hub as you describe, but the propshaft is completly free wheeling when in fwd gear. I'm thinking the fwd clutch dog may have failed.

That's a strange way to break one. The clutch dogs are pretty rugged. Incident happen in Georgian Bay? That area makes Winnipesaukee look like it's not all that rocky...
It would be 45 minute job to remove the broken lower unit, bolt on a brand new SEI 116 lower unit, fill it with lube, and be done with it. They cost $845. Just a thought.

I used an SEI drive when I replaced mine a few years back. The first year it was a bit noisy as the gears broke in, after that it has been perfect:)
I just noticed that they now make Bravo replacements and Cobra Conversion kits. They really have filled a niche. http://www.sterndrive.cc/

Thanks guys, you are all very helpful. I'm still in Canada (a little south of Georgian Bay however). The unfortunate part is my son knows the area very well and just drifted over the rocks while getting ready to ski....he felt terrible about it.
Do you think the local marinas would install the SEI 116 replacement or would they insist on Mercruiser replacement?

I had Independent marine install mine (it was there for diagnosis- took fishing line around prop seal, causing failure and fluid loss- bye bye gears!). I bought it and they installed it. I am sure most marinas are familiar with them and will install them.
My insurance would not cover it, but would have covered your loss.

I had Shep Browns do mine and it was quick and as painless as it could be. I give them a call.

OK, thanks to all for the ideas. I'll make some calls when I return home. I'm relieved that there is an easy solution. Thanks again.
