Does anyone know around what date ice started to form last year? It seems to me it was earlier than usual.

I removed my dock and boat lift on January 7, 2004, all by my little old self, and about two days later it got very cold and everywhere iced over. About two weeks later, there were Ford F-350 SuperCab xlt 4x4's driving around out on the ice.

Phoenix,

You are not going to tell us more about the dry heat when the temps dip below freezing and we are all hibernating for the winter, are you?

The boat is winterized and it is way too early to even think about boating again next year. Thanks god it is as great as it is in the summer months.

Last year was the latest the ice become safe off our beach. We have a tradition of spending New Year's day at the lake, and have always been able to walk on the ice. Several years ago, there was open water on December 31 and yet it was three inches thick on New Year's day, due to a zero degree nite causing a flash freeze. This year, we did not dare go on the ice on January 1. That was a first. As nature often does, things balanced out. By February, the ice was thicker than normal. The earliest walk on the ice was December 17'th, about 10 years ago.

Elsewhere on this site you can find almost 5 years of water temperature records. While the range is not exact, I'm sure you can guesstimate by looking at when the water temp approaches the mid-30's and stays there.
