I just got back from the Dominican and heard a rumor, from a very reliable source that Market Basket food store is going to be building a store just above the round-a-about. From the circle heading towards the weirs, that big field on the right that was for sale. OH, I can only hope....

Oh goody. If that is true, there will be even more of a traffic nightmare than there already is in Meredith.
Someplace on Rt104 would be much better. But yeah it would be nice at least 8 months out of the year....:D

I'll believe it when I see it! Remember when "reliable sources" said that MB was going to move into the old Jackson Star? MB would be nice, though! Isn't Hannaford's building a smaller store in Gilford? Maybe their old location would be a good fit for Market Basket.

Unless something has changed, that piece of property is to be developed into a hotel and conference center type thing. I believe the "to be built soon" sign is still there, of course it may be under or behind a snowbank.

Just in, From rumor control, I do admit when I'm wrong. Sorry to get your hopes up, mine sure were. But indeed as the Soup Nazi from the Seinfeld show would say--- NO MARKET BASKET FOR YOU---

You mean "Whole Paycheck". The best would be Trader Joe's!

Now that's a perfect fit for the soon to be old Gliford Hannaford's.

All the undeveloped land on 104, near 93, seems strange to me. I would think it eventually it will look like exit 20.
Although, I became friendly last summer with the older gentleman (Drake) who owns the roadside stand with all the outdoor furniture, and lawn ornaments, and just about everything else. (right hand side heading toward 93.) Anyway, he tells me he has been trying to sell 70 odd acres across the street for years and years...and can't get a sniff of a legit offer.

I believe the town of New Hampton really and truly wants to keep the small town feel about it. There is a Mayberry RFD feel about this town, and for them to go from thinking like the 60's to 2011 is just alittle to much for the town. Its been like this for 21 years that I have lived here, small town feel with small town politics.
When the present administration finally finishes its role, maybe another 10 years or so, and newer faces become the norm, that is when you might see some changes in New Hampton. Personally, I love it this way but nothing can stand the test of time. Its hard to get approval for new businesses if the town doesn't want to change. IMHO that is what is going on with exit 23.

The owner of one of the business's near where you are speaking of, had mentioned to me when I was in his shop a year or so ago, that they had been notified as an abutting land owner, that some people were looking to develop a large parcel of property located behind behind the dunkin donuts etc. They were told at the time that it was to be a "mall". Obviously nothing has come of that plan and I never heard anymore about it.
I also see the area as being another Exit 20 someday.

You know...I just thought of another thing about his area.
Last October, I was having breakfast at 104 Diner/Bobby's Girl, late morning, just me and another gentleman at the counter. It turned out, he owns a great deal of the land in that area. I forget exactly if he said he owned the land that the diner sits on, or all the land behind it. I think it was the land out behind it. Anyway...not the point. He told me, several years back, not that long ago...20/25 years, a deal was in place for a very large water/amusement park and hotel to be built right off exit 23. Deal was done...plans had been approved...and I believe a ground breaking date had been set. And then something happened...I forget exactly what he said, but I think it was a hurricane. A really bad one, and it did terrible damage to much of this company's properties in the south. The NH project got put on hold, and later was scrapped all togther. True story. That close to exit 23 looking very different.
Now, if you need gas...well...you have 7 or 8 choices.

FYI: In Gilford, Hannafords will build next to Lowes, and open November.
A Gilford Hannafords employee told me that ....Mart wants to expand with a super store with all their groceries. They own that hilltop property.
A dreadful thought!

Wal-Mart is in the process of trying to expand the Tilton store into a Super Wal-Mart, but I'm not aware that they would be doing a super-store expansion in Gilford. I would be quite happy to see a Super Wal-Mart in Gilford since it would hold down prices in the area. but then again I doubt Shaw's would get in a price war since they seem to care less how high their prices are.

Shaw's has closed EVERY store in Connecticut & I would not be surprised to see them start shutting down stores in NH soon (Hello Tilton Shaw's) .

I am all for a Super Walmart in Gifford but I don't see how Walmart can expand the current space into a super store without adding onto the building. They can't really utilize the Hannaford space since it is at the other end of the mall.

I would have loved to have a regular Walmart or a Super Walmart in the Jackson Star site but alas it did not happen. Maybe not enough room for a super Walmart there. I am not as interested in the food though do get some bargains in Walmart food purchases now and then.
