Dog Rescue Underway!

Tonight my wife drove four hours up to the coast of Maine to "rescue" a beautiful Newfoundland puppy which is suffering from severe neglect. This dog, which is one of about 15 or so, was hidden while a rescue shelter came and took the rest of the dogs (ranging in age from a few months to a few years old), beacause the owners: were so embarassed by his condition. Our friends own this dogs brother who is the same age, but weighs twice or even two thirds more then what this dog weighs. This gives you an idea of his shape. This dogs is very weak and unable to do much right now.

Though infuriated that someone would do this to a dog, I am happy to have gotten him. We will be bringing him to the vet tommorow to get him assessed and looked over.

I'll keep this going to let people know how he progresses. I can see this will be a long road

Kudos to you and your wife! You are doing a wonderful thing for a baby that needs it very much. Do keep up with this thread.....I know I want to find out how he makes out.

There is nothing in the world like a Rescue dog. Their love and devotion is unbelievable. I swear they know they were given a second chance, and are eternally grateful.

I used to be involkved with dobermans as my handle is two dobys. They have passed on and because of homeowners issues I was told I would be dropped if I got another doby. I now have 2 Great Pyrs, both rescued from down south. These are great dogs and their are many more looking for homes. If your interested in a pet, please try rescue dogs and cats first.

Well, my wife brought the dog (maybe named lucky?...) in today and here are the results: His weight is severly low at only 38lbs (should be closer to 80). He is running a temp of 104 (not sure why), so they put him on some antibiotics. Doc. didn't want to do any blood work or any tests for that matter due to his already weakened state. Found a few scars, but no broken bones.

We are feeding him three times a day in two cup increments, consisting of raw venison, cooked rice, yogurt and his meds. We'll be bringing him back in ten days to see if he is gaining weight. The doctor hopes he will gain 5-10lbs in this time. He also said not to get our hopes up for a total recovery yet as this fella still has a long way to go and other things may surface.

My wife told the doctor she would like to give the dog a bath, but he advised against it stating that seeing the dog completely wet would be really disheartening as he is only skin and bones.

Petting him tonight my wife noticed what she thought were some scabs under his neck. Upon further inspection she noticed a spike seemed to be sticking out. She ended up pulling two porcupine quills each being burried about two inches. They had been there for some time. We are going to call the vet about these tommorow too.

Maybe that's the reason for the fever. I'm surprised the vet didn't feel those. Bless you for taking this on, we were thinking of getting a Newfie before we decided on another Great Dane. Best of luck with the pup.

Arbortech you and your wife have a good heart. Although the road to recovery for this young Newfie, might be long, it will hopefully end up rewarding. Newfie's are wonderful dogs, that enjoy many things.

You mention that your friend has the brother to this dog, so out of curiosity how old are they at this point?

Finally do you know what happened to the rest of the dogs, that where taken?

We've been told thesedogs are ten months old. His brother is at a healthy weight of just over eighty pounds. We got test results back today from his stool showing he has "whipworm". This could also be a factor in his temp., and lack of weight. Picked up meds for this too.

"Lucky" as we have been calling him (amongst other names, haven't decided on one yet) was much more energetic today. My wife gave him a good bath which resulted in a much better smelling and looking dog. The quills we pulled yesterday, come to find out, had "migrated" through his body and come out tip first, thought this may have something to do with the infection the doctor said he had. We noticed today that he had one of his front teeth knocked out at some point too.

I'll get some picture on in the next day or so.

The rest of the dogs (15 or so) got picked up by "New England Newfoundland rescue". Not sure of anything further on them

God bless and Good Luck Arbortech - I had to put my 11 year old rescue golden down three months ago. He had been abused & neglected when I got him and he needed 7 months of surgeries to get him back to normal. I had almost 10 awesome years with him after that. Aside from marrying my wife and the birth of my daughter rescuing that dog was one of the best things I've ever done in my life.

I wish you and your wife the best of luck. Few things in life are as deserving of our love and kindness as our dogs.

Most people have visions of picking up a new puppy at the breeders....a happy, healthy new friend for the family. But it is especially touching to me that someone would invest some much time, money and love to rescue an abused animal. You have a special place in the hearts of all of us animal lovers.

I was wondering how "Lucky" was doing.............that fortunate dog.

We had a rescue dog, Mickey, for awhile. He was a beagle-basset mix and had been abused. He just loved attention, but never learned to play "fetch" - if you moved your arm to throw something, he would cower.

He never barked, but howled at sirens, which our current dog picked up from him and continues to this day (living near the fire and police stations means a good bit of howling, too!).

He also loved to wander and was expert at finding ways to get out of the fenced yard, some of which we never figured out. Unfortunately, that led to his death when he was hit by a car. We'll always miss him.

Here is the status of our new family pet...."Myren" as we now call him. He has turned out to be an awesome dog. Great with our two toddlers, no hang-ups and a quick learner.

His health is improving steadily. He has gained 26lbs in 3 weeks! His infection has cleared up, but he has developed a spot of mange that we are addressing. He is full of energy now, waking us up at night to play. It's kind of like having a newborn again! He gets along great with our Lab and listens great. We are still working on house breaking him, but in due time.
