I'm a little confused. You say the Winter Carnival is cancelled and show a list of events.

It appears that they simply added the two lines at the top, rather than delete the info about the Winter Carnival. On the Town of Alton Home Page, under upcoming events, it states the Carnival is cancelled.

Also, the Baysider had a post on Facebook stating that the activities have been cancelled.

Not to worry, SS, you haven't totally lost it!:D

What are ice conditions like on the bay right now? I have not been up at all this winter, even though I am a whopping 30 minutes away. I have seen reports in the open parts of the lake with 10 inches of ice which sounds a bit light compared to past years.

There should be plenty of ice in Alton Bay even with the upcoming three day warm spell. I would think the three day warmup will just melt some of the snow on top causing more slush but it will do little to the underlying solid black ice. More cold weather still to come so the ice is here for a while in my opinion...

In order to order the food for the Carnival, the order had to be in by today. Not knowing how conditions will be with the ice and ice/snow, especially with some rain or rain showers that are forecasted for Friday, made it a tough decision to order and perhaps not be able to use it.

Bottom line, although it may have seemed a little presumptive to cancel at this time, it may end up being a good decision. Regardless, I am sure there are those who would disagree. :rolleye1:

Last I heard today, the snowmobile drags are still on from 10-2. Contact the club at : <!--webbot bot="Substitution" S-Variable="CompanySalesEmail" startspan -->info@mountmajorsnowmobileclub.com<!--webbot bot="Substitution" i-checksum="43991" endspan --> (info@mountmajorsnowmobileclub.com) for more information.

Also, don't know if the Alton Rotary Kid's Fishing Derby will still be on.

Uppie,

Is there a breakfast this weekend? Some of us are still going to visit the lake regardless of the carnival's cancellation.

As always, our Masonic Lodge just south of the Alton Circle has our breakfast buffet from 7-11 on the third Sunday each month. If you walk away hungry, it is your own fault.

We are pleased to be shown on this website's calendar each month.

See the info here: http://www.winnipesaukee.com/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=1585&day=2007-6-17

Thanks GH, and thanks Don for this vehicle to advertise our breakfast.

Posted by the Baysider on Facebook:

We received a phone call at 4:25 p.m. today from the Alton town offices, telling us that Winter Carnival was back on... partially. We have no more information than that, as nobody answered our return phone call, but we will pass along info as it is given to us.

Just like New England weather:rolleye2:.

Would it still be safe to just walk on the lake? I am told that there are springs and it is not really safe to be out on Lake Winnipesaukee but see that many do go out on the lake in winter for all kinds of winter activities.

Ice thickness is not the issue...it's plenty safe to be walking on Alton Bay ice right now. With all the snow on the ice and the coming warm weather and rain the issue is going to be standing slush and water on top of the ice. If you've never tried to get around on the ice in these conditions I can tell you it's absolutely miserable. Unless you're wearing rubber boots to your knees your feet will instantly be soaked...

There have been no followup posts on Facebook from the Baysider on the Winter Carnival.

I have heard from a few townspeople that the Carnival is still cancelled. One person was in town hall and was told this morning that because it was on the website and given to the newspaper, it would be best to leave it cancelled.

Sooooooooo, I assume still cancelled.

Too bad. :(

Well that is a sad thing that it's cancelled but still will be at the lake with my daughter. Remember any day at the LAKE is better than any other. ( with a couple of exceptions ) just so I don't get into huge trouble had to add that

I still came up from NJ anyway despite the cancellation of the festivities. It was 62 degrees when I arrived and 64 degrees back in NJ. Tomorrow is another story, but the view here is much better than back home. I can see Mt. Washington out my back window here, at home all I see out the back is dirty snow and my garage. Besides, I get to see my NH summer neighbors and Forum Friends + have dinner at the William Tell :liplick:

There's still a band playing and pot luck dinner at the American Legion in town that night - I'm not sure if there's a cover charge or whatever - but there's posters in Fiddleheads advertising the event. Bittersweet is playing (oldies and classic rock).

Rock on!

Just so that I am clear…. are there any activities going on tomorrow in Alton Bay??

For example the snow mobile race or horse-drawn carriage rides??

I drove by the Bay this morning and it's pretty dead.

There's NOTHING going on there - a few (like less than 10) snowmobiles, and a handful of folks ice fishing... No other activities. Consider the wind chill today, it's probably just as well. Brrrrr!

Winter Carnival is cancelled, as is the Rotary Kids Fishing Derby. Sleigh rides were part of the Carnival.

Mt. Major snowmobile club is still holding the drags, as far as I know. I have not heard they were cancelling.

It looks like it's going to be cold enough to have the radar run on Alton Bay:D
The lake is hardened up and a few double layer spots should freeze up tonight.
Come down and support the Mt Major Snowmobile Club! Sunday from 10-2.
We will also be selling club hats, shirts, maps and stickers. See our website at www.mountmajorsnowmobileclub.com. The Boyscouts will also be selling their items.
