EXCELLENT. Like most of you, I have been up there but it took a lot longer get there....and I did it on a (touring) motorcycle. :D

I have also done Pikes Peak on a (touring) motorcycle....which is mostly dirt road as well..(14,000+ feet) Mount Washington at 6300+/- feet was much more Severe. :D NB

That's nothing... you should've seen Argie driving it in a Town & Country minivan. :D

That's a scary road on a good day, going slow. I can't imagine doing what those guys did in those videos - it's pretty impressive! :)

Is there a video of a race DOWN the road?

Here's some racing results on the Mt Washington road race from Wikipedia.

In 1899, the very first race was won by a Stanley Steamer Locomobile in 2 hours and 10 minutes. Stanley was built in Maine and was a steam powered car.

In 1928, the race was won by a Franklin car in 14:49.

In 1956, Carrol Shelby drove a Ferrari to win in 10:21.

In 1961, a Porsche powered VW bug won in 9:13.

Maybe the road was not paved with any asphalt back in 1961 and was a dirt road, all the way, bottom to top? That seems likely, plus there's probably been many road drainage improvements made over the years.

In 2001, a methanol powered 500-hp Hyundai Tiburon won in 4:59 on a course shortened due to the weather or something.
............

The shortest hiking trail up Mt Washington is on the other side, the west side, starting at the Cog Railroad station, and it takes about 3 1/2 to 4 hours to hike up to the summit.

Carol Shelby in his 1956 Ferrari GP. He later went on to do battle with Ferrari in the '60's LeMans' with his Cobras. Odd how he started in one and then hated the Ferraris.

My wife and I went up on the Harley a few years ago during bike week and it took a lot longer than 6 minutes, even longer going down. Yep, down was the scary part.

Anyway this being the 150th anniversary of the road, there is one weekend devoted to horse travel on the road. And Sunday July 17th is horse traffic only.

As my wife is involved in long distance endurance riding she is aware of groups of horse owners planning on being there for the weekend. I told her to send the link to this video to her horse friends so they could get a preview of the course.:D

My wife and I have done it a couple of times on the Harley as well. No doubt coming down is more scary than going up. That dirt road section coming down with the wind blowing on a bike, with a passenger, certainly lets you know your alive. Does anybody know why it is not 100% paved?
