Bakeries in the area

We know of the YumYum Shoppe and would like to know about some others.

Please list the best ones you know. We are willing to drive a little for a good one like Mirabella's in Tewksbury or Mike's Pastry Shop in the NorthEnd.

Obviously we won't get one like Mike's but thats what we want. Please help, THanks!

Sorry I can't help much but when I lived in Tewksbury I lived across the street from the Mirabella's. Great bakery!

There was / is the woman who bought out Donna Loves bakery business in Moultonborough several years ago. I do not know the womans name or if she is still in operation.

Sorry I can't help much but when I lived in Tewksbury I lived across the street from the Mirabella's. Great bakery!
I live in Tewksbury now and Mirabellas is not what it used to be.

Bova's Bakery in the North End is open 24/7. Spinelli's Bakery in East Boston is my favorite though. If you like Mikes you'll love Spinelli's.

That being said, there really is nothing in this area to compare to the Italian bakeries in East Boston and the North End.

I do like Panera's in Concord though and I wish they would build one here in the Lakes Region. In addition to the bread and pastries that they offer, their hot soup, salads and sandwiches would sell well up here year round. The Concord store is always packed.

Love Bites closed but still not what we are after.

I know we'll never get anything like the North End of Boston, but there must be something Concord or north?

Heath's Super Market over in Center Harbor has a real good bake shop where probably most everything for the store gets baked.

What's the hand's-down favorite bakery spot for all the locals at Heath's? Way in the back of Heath's, in a small space next to the doorway that goes to the rear storage room, there's a well-worn, old looking, wire shelf stand that has three shelves, about 24" wide, and it is the day-old shelf space where various baked items get marked down and sold off. One never knows what will show up on the day-old baked shelf; chocolate whoopie pie six-paks, italian garlic bread, cornbread, pumpernickle bread, chocolate macaroons, homemade cranberry oatmeal cookies, to name some names in the line-up of Heath's co-conspirator list of baked goodies! At half price, it all gets sold off by the end of the day, usually. It might be the busiest spot in the entire store, and probably the only spot in the store where you can get into a conversation with a total stranger as most everybody tends to be reticent.

Freebie courtesy cup-of-coffee at Heath's? Thanks for asking....why certainly....about five or six different Green Mountain coffee brews.....courtesy means free.....no kidding....

I moved in 1994 so that could certainly be the case!

I live in portsmouth now and there are some good bakeries in this area. Granted I will eat anything...

99.9% of everything Heath's bakes and sells, they buy from a supplier and is frozen. All they do is take it out of the freezer, thaw it out and bake it.
Their stuff may taste good and they do have some decent breads etc., but homemade, high end baked goods there not !

Amilyn's in Alton Bay is very good. We recently went to a birthday party and they got the cake from Amilyn's (aka Busy Corner Store - right across from JP China in the Bay) and the cake was very good!

...ok....but getting it for 50% off sure makes it taste better plus bakery products get better with age! ....plus their cup-of-coffee is courtesy coffee which is the same as free....no kidding... :D

If you go over to Hannaford's in Meredith, they won't even give you the time of day for free....don't ya know!

There's a little bakery in downtown Laconia and in downtown Plymouth across from the common. I've had a coffee and a snack at both, on several occasions. Are they any good? You decide.

Try the Village Bakery in downtown Laconia. It is very good and has limited baked goods on display. Talking to the owner, they will bake anything on order. The baked goods are very good.

I have a daughter in NYC who is a successful Industrial designer. Her hobby is baking and her baking is getting to be more than a hobby. I tried to settle her in the Lakes Region area and open a bakery. Much like 'Love's Bite'. Unfortunately the banks are making it difficult to borrow money for new ventures. There were a couple of restaurant owners who said they would hire her. They never follow through. Any thoughts for a new baker?

I really miss Andersen's bakery on the Moultonborough/Centre Harbor border. How long have they been gone? Anyone? Wild Meadow Canoe kayak occupies the former bakery's building.

Not a bakery per say, but just a reminder that Moulton Farms will closing in a few weeks for the season. (Jan 1st?) I love their Dutch Apple pies, and lemon squares. You can call ahead and order a pie, pick it up on the way home.
They bake other stuff too like breads.

Beans & Greens farm in Gilford does a lot of baking, but it's not a bakery by any means. There really is no full sevrice bakery in the area. I think the supermarkets like Shaws & Hannaford & Market Basket who all have a bakery really make it difficult for a full service bakery to get established in the area.

Yes, and there's Fiddleheads in Alton, which also has a bakery section in it - and yes, they can tie your boxes up with strings... isn't that a few of your favorite things? ;):)

Riverstones Fine Pastries, located on Route 16 in Conway next to the Army-Navy store. Worth the drive, IMO. :liplick:
