The water (north of M'boro bay) is 39 degrees this morning. That is the temperature at which the water turns over. The water is at its heaviest and sinks to the bottom, displacing the bottom water and exposing it to the chill. This is the transition step before ice starts to form.

Has anyone seen a transition? Is there anything to see, or can it only be detected by measuring the temperature at different levels?

In some water bodies, depending on the depth, you can see an increase in turbidity as the lower water rises bringing with it suspended matter. It would be more noticeable in the shallower basins.
