A couple weeks ago WinnDixie went to the doctor to address some symptoms that she had been having for a few months.
Thank goodness she finally sought medical attention because she needed a quadruple by-pass!

Last week she had the surgery and thankfully it was a success. She is now home recuperating and is finding that being a heart patient is not so easy.

She is very anxious to feel well enough to get back to the Forum. Hopefully she will be back to her jovial self very soon.

Jeanie, we continue to send healing thoughts and prayers your way for a speedy recovery!
I can't wait to see you at the lake next year. Real hugs are much better than cyber hugs! ;)

This upcoming Thanksgiving gives many of us much to be thankful for! Cheers to good health, family and friends. :D

Be well my friend!

With love and a great big hug!

Having heart issues myself I feel for her. Hopefully the operation did the trick and she will be back amongst healthy again soon. Yes if you have symptoms of any kind go see a Doctor. I hate the hospital myself, but my heart is not something I can fix with the hand tools I have in my truck if you know what I mean...:D So well wishes and my prayers are going up for a speedy recovery.

So did they crack her ribs open and all?....'Cause I got some pretty good jokes to tell her right about now!   :D

So glad to know that WinnDixie is home and doing well. With her positive attitude and great sense of humor, I have no doubt that she will make a full recovery and be back to doing the things she enjoys very soon. I know she was forced to forgo baking a million pies for the Thanksgiving feast, but understand her daughter will be filling in for her on that task for this year. Next year she will no doubt resume her leadership role in the pie brigade.

I have never had a serious illness or any surgery of that magnitude, but have friends and family who have. They tell me the experience can be likened to being raised from the dead, when they emerged from surgery and realized they were still on this side of the great beyond. It seemed to have given them an entirely new perspective on life. It was amazing how quickly they recovered, as each day brought renewed strength and improvement. It wasn’t long before they were out and about again and back to their normal routines.

Wishing WinnDixie and all her family a wonderful Thanksgiving and get well soon.

Here are your own words from the FF 7 thread.

Cake dreams

"Thanks for identifying those in attendance...very nice to put the faces with the names. A special thanks from me (now that I know who she is) to Mrs. Hermit Cover!! I loved that cake; it looked so good! I would have cut a piece with chocolate, and--as I watched--along came Mrs. Hermit Cover. She looked it over for a minute, and I was saying "Come on! You ARE going to have chocolate, aren't you??" She was standing closer to the vanilla half, but--YES!!--she reached a little bit and cut herself a piece from the chocolate side! I had a virtual bite right along with her!!"

Keep that sense of humor and getting better will be a piece of cake! :)

Yup! I am home and doing quite well, really. This is one week after the surgery and I'm getting around pretty well. As some of you know, for sure, that CABG (Cardiac Artery Bypass with Grafting) "adventure" is quite the ride! Oh yeah, Lakesrider, I had the chest crack! I could probably even laugh at your jokes by now...and--remember when I sternly lectured YOU about going to the Dr.--right now! And then I just kept "paddling down DeNial", myself!! Well, God blessed me just the same! I am still here. But ALL of you listen to Lakesrider's words. It will literally save your life. Thanks, again, for all your great support. The Forum is very special to me...and I want to wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving. Love you all...back soon!

Leave it to you to find the humor even in difficult circumstances. I think a sense of humor lightens the spirit and gets us through the hard times of life. Keep on keeping on!

I went to the heart surgeon today, and he is well pleased...thinks in another two weeks he'll turn me back over to the cardiologist. I'm doing quite well, except for FREEZING! It went from the 70's to the high 20's here right after Thanksgiving. I am on two blood thinners (as we go into winter--my timing is always so impeccable!)...so I'm hoping for a warm-up...soon! But, truly, I am really, really blessed! I count this Forum among my blessings, too! Thanks again!

I got an e-mail yesterday letting me know that Jeannie has suffered a "significant stroke" Friday night as in in the neurological ICU. She has lost the ability to speak and cannot move her right arm or leg. The doctors say it is too early to know the long term ramifications, and say the next 3 to 5 days are critical.

I'll keep you posted as I get updates. So far, there is nothing new to report since yesterday.

Please send lots of healing thoughts and prayers. Our friend really needs them!

I add my prayers and best wishes to WinnDixie, as well as to her husband and family. I pray that they will be given the strength to get through this terrible nightmare. It is so hard to believe this turn of events, as she had been making such good progress in recovering from the surgery. She is a dear and caring person – honest and generous to the core. May she recover from this set back and join us again soon. She enjoys this forum so much and has been a wonderful contributor – her posts always being in good taste and mindful of others’ views and opinions.

God bless you, WinnDixie. We miss you and pray for your return to good health soon.

Today's e-mail:

We are pretty much in the wait and see phase of this thing. To call it maddening would be to understate it vastly!!! We are waiting for the doctors to be able to make some predictions, at least about the near future. At this point we take as good signs the fact that she hasn't had to be placed on a respirator and the fact that she has remained responsive and able to follow commands. I think we are in for a very long journey.

I thought you might like to put a face to the name.
May I present Mr & Mrs WinnDixie:

I'm extremely sorry to report that there really isn't any new or good news. They are trying to get her moved to a skilled nursing facility. Haven't had an update for a few days now. Jeanie is still unable to use the right side of her body - a real nightmare for a physically and emotionally active woman. Not being able to converse must be pure hell for her too. Her outlook isn't good, but this is the season of miracles and Jeanie is a fighter. If I hear anything more, I'll be sure to pass along the info. I know that Jeanie truly appreciates the healing thoughts and well wishes. Thank you.

Winnipesaukee.com has been such an important part of Jeanie's life over the past many years. Remember how she stayed in front of the computer and watched all of ForumFest back in August and chatted with a couple of us via cell phone during the event? I would like to make her a card with your help that contains wishes from her friends here on the Forum to let her see how much we are thinking of her. I am thinking of putting the Winnipesaukee.com logo on the front along with some thumbnail pictures around it from PhotoPost. On the inside I would like to put your avatar with your message. There is no rush to get this done. I want to be sure to get lots of well wishes, so my target deadline will be January 5th.

Thanks for your help! I know this will cheer her up immensely.

So you'll get there—just keep your spirits up, WinnDixie! ;)

I spoke to Jeanie's husband, Russ today. It is with a somewhat lighter heart I can post that she is making progress in the right direction.

She was able to swallow four out of five spoons of water. Hopefully this ability will continue to improve.

When two people are in the room, she watches the person who is talking and is now alert enough to watch some television. She also has been able to sit in a chair, with support.

Jeanie is doing well with her physical therapy. Her left arm movement ability is great and her left leg is quite good. The very affected right arm is beginning to respond to the electric (electronic???) therapy with contractions in the muscles. Her right leg is slower to respond, which the therapist says is normal.

It is encouraging that Jeanie was able to pass Russ' hat to him from one side of the bed to the other. What a difference a few weeks makes! Hopefully, these small victories will lead to bigger ones. When Russ asked if she would like him to arrange for her hair to be done, she gave a quick thumbs up. :D

The road she travels continues to be long and arduous, but if anyone can do it, it's our friend Jeanie. Thanks for your healing thoughts and prayers. Her Winnipesaukee.com card should be going out tomorrow. Sorry for the delay. :o You all mean so much to her and she is going to love it.

I spoke to Russ a little while ago. Jeanie is making more progress and is definitely very aware of everything going on around her. And there is nothing wrong with her memory. (I'm so relieved!) He is absolutely sure that she is going to completely enjoy her get well card! :D Wish I could have delivered it in person.

Jeanie is able to sit in her chair and watch television for periods of up to four hours, without having to rest her head back.

Recently, Russ brought in a map, which had the northeast area of the country.
He asked her where Winnipesaukee was. She put her finger right on it.
He then asked where Lake Ontario would be and she picked it out without difficulty too.

He is quite sure that she can read, but may not be quite ready to sit and read a book.

Recently she was able to completely take five spoon of water, along with five spoons of crushed ice, without any difficulties.

She has not yet had her hair done because she is receiving very low levels of oxygen and the doctors would like that chore to wait.
The meter can output up to level 30 and she is receiving only 1 1/2.
Her oxygen level is about 88 and needs to be over 90 to be free of it.
Once the oxygen is gone, she will be allowed this nice treat.

Molly gets to visit Jeanie on Sunday mornings. She gets to hop up on the bed to greet Jeanie, who really seems to enjoy patting her very much.

Recently she was asked if she might like to have her I-Pod and she gave a quick finger response of yes! Russ says she is the only 73 year-old in the facility with this high tech device. Currently it is on a docking station with speakers and when asked if she might like the ear buds... it was a big yes.

A friend that was visiting asked if she would like her fingernails trimmed. Jeanie gave the finger yes and the friend proceeded trimming and applying nail polish. When Russ arrived later that day, he was shocked at the color as it was not something she would have ever chosen for herself. Surprised, he said out loud with the therapist present, I wonder who did that? The therapist told him that she knew who did it for her, because Jeanie spelled it out on her letter board with her finger. Russ asked if she would like their daughter to bring stuff to change the color and further trim the nails... she responded with a quick finger yes!

She sure has come a long way since the beginning of December and I pray the trend continues. She is at a great facility and has the excellent support and care of her wonderful family. (I hope their NH daughter is signed up for frequent flyer miles! ;) )

Jeanie and Russ both greatly appreciate the get well wishes from their Forum fiends. I know from experience that this kind of support truly helps.
Thank you - you're the best. :D

I should have taken better care to snap clearer pictures. :o I really needed to get it into the envelope and sealed up or I would have been "fixing it" forever!
Most of the wording can be viewed in above posts if they are not legible.
(Only the get well wishes that Jeanie had seen before the stroke were altered to fit the situation.)
I do have each saved in a Word document if you still cannot read them.

WinnDixie's great big get well wish from her friends at Winnipesaukee.com finally went out. It is about 32" wide and 18" tall. The mail guy was impressed.

http://i965.photobucket.com/albums/ae131/RattlesnakeGal/JeanieGetWellCard.jpg?t=1296137313

Bailey's Bubble (http://www.winnipesaukee.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11172&highlight=bailey%27s+bubble) thought it was a photo opportunity as I was trying to get a shot of the card upright.
It made me smile and helped me to forget for a moment that my dear friend is in such a predicament.

Get well wishes posted before her stroke were included. Some of the wording did get changed just a tad to fit the situation. Also included were Allie's Christmas Wish along with Eillac, Chickie and Lakesrider's multiple posts. Chickie, I just had to include a shot of Sawyer's sign on your get well wish. :D And how could I not include Lakesrider's fantastic wild owl picture?! The other photos included were of places that I knew especially touched their lives. Rattlesnake Island, where Russ used to fish with a pal, as well as our wonderful visit with them in 2010. Allen A, where she worked and where they got married. Belknap Point Motel (http://www.bpmotel.com/), where they loved to stay when they visited, an aerial shot of Laconia because they spent about 40 of their 52 years of their marriage, and the 2010 ForumFest group shot. She may not have been there in person, but she didn't miss a moment! I'm so glad we were live. I had to throw in a picture of that incredible cake too.
Thank you everyone for your well wishes. I think Jeanie and Russ will enjoy it.

I haven't read this thread for awhile, but thank you for the update on Jeanie's status. Has anyone told you lately how awesome you are in keeping in touch with people, reporting on them, and keeping the calendar updated? Oh wow. That is a terrible turn of events. She was doing so well. May have been a clot related to the surgery maybe?
Yikes. Sending up prayers for her. Let her know we are all thinking of her.
Tell her to fight, fight, fight.....

This should be in a separate thread. people may not look in here once they have posted.....

:o I figured it would show up in new posts often enough, that I wouldn't need to start a new thread. Should this thread keep going or is it time for a new one???

I'm sorry you missed our first card Chip. Not to worry, any get well wishes will be passed along to Jeanie. I promise! I know she will look forward to receiving them. If anyone has a particular photo that you might like to share with her, I'd be happy to send that too.

Every night just before we go to bed we all say one prayer to the Lord Above or to the Power of Nature or to anyone or anything that we feel may help with healing Winn Dixie. Maybe we will be heard and she will improve and be happy in summer. Knowing that we do not know the plan for any of us, but trusting that there is one and in the end we all may live happily in God's plan.

Jeanie and Russ really enjoyed our card! He read all the get-well wishes to her and then set it up on her bed and asked her to point to different things on it. She was able to this without hesitation and no trouble at all. Jeanie holds the card open on her lap and looks at it very intently for long periods of time. Thank you everyone for making our friend happy. :D

A message from Russ for all of us:

I received some really great news!!!!! :D

Jeanie has made significant progress in the past four or five 5 days.

It started last weekend with printing her name on a white board. At first she had trouble with the A, but since Sunday she has not failed to print it correctly. She now prints Russ's name correctly every time.

Wednesday, the speech therapist reported that she was trying to talk and that she was certain that she had identified many of the words and they were in context.

Thursday, she began talking to both her daughters and Russ. The voice is in a whisper, but the majority of the words are discernible and are all in context.

To add a frosting to this beautiful cake, Friday morning she was able to eat apple sauce from a spoon. That is a big improvement over water and ice chips!

A new swallowing test has been scheduled for the 23rd and everyone is hoping that she can get rid of the feeding tube. Even if the doctors insist on keeping the tube for a while longer, it is likely that some foods will be permitted.

These developments are very encouraging! Russ tells me that it is obvious that Jeanie is very aware that she is on the right path and her demeanor has brightened considerably with the recent progress she has made.

Tears of happiness are running down my face. I'm so thrilled for our friend. :D

Her son in-law is working on setting up one of his retired laptops, so he can bring it in for Jeanie. He is hoping that she may be able to type. Russ is looking forward to logging onto Winnipesaukee.com, so that Jeanie can see the well wishes for herself. :D

Each night mention Jeanie in your prayers. If you don't say prayers then it is never too late to start. I hope Jeanie is going to get stronger and stronger. My daughter put "Jeanie... recovering from stroke" on the prayer list that her church keeps going. I am not even all that religious but do think that prayer cannot harm, and know for sure that some of my own prayers have been answered.

Happily Jeanie continues to make wonderful progress! Her vocal cords are getting stronger. She is able to speak in paragraphs now with more volume.

Her swallowing test on February 23rd went very well. She is eating and has been able to give up the mid-day liquid nutrition. I expect before long, she will be completely off this.

She is enjoying back issues of the Citizen (http://www.citizen.com/). Reading without difficulty and with complete comprehension.

Recently the physical therapist bent her right leg, which is the affected side, and asked Jeanie to push. She did and was able to put her leg out straight. Great progress.

Jeanie is better in the morning when she is fresh and gets pretty tired by the afternoon after all her therapies. Russ tells me that this does frustrate her a bit, especially because it affects her speech a little.

The computer hasn't happened yet, but hopefully it will be set up for her soon.

Our Winn-Dixie is one very special and very determined lady. I bet the doctors at the hospital where she was first brought would be completely amazed with her recovery. I know that I am! :D

Thank you very much for your continued support, healing thoughts and prayers. They mean so much to her.

They may be able to help. (Maybe we send the donations to them ???) Just a thought.

They specialize in working with children and adults that could benefit from communication devices like the IPAD. This from their website:

From some thoughtful Forum friends!

One question that I have is; would this incur any new monthly bills for this retired couple that may be dealing with lots of medical bills?
(I am not sure how much their insurance etc. is covering for Jeanie's treatment.)

I am not at all familiar with iPads, but they sure sound intriguing. Would there be special software to buy along with it?

Have I mentioned lately that you guys are terrific?!!! :D

You can get an iPad that has 3G, which allows you to connect to the internet anywhere. (more expensive) You pay for a monthly "data plan." $20 usually.

An iPad without 3G is less expensive, but you need a wireless internet connection to use the internet. Most people have a wireless internet connection if they have broadband installed in their house. Lots of stores, hotels and even whole towns and cites have wireless "hot spots" too.

Any iPad requires the user to have iTunes (http://www.apple.com/itunes/)installed on their computer in order to make it work. (Set-up, installs, updates, buying cool apps) You need to have a computer with iTunes AND an iPad to get started.
iTunes is a free program for Mac and PC and is fairly intuitive to use.

The iPad is nothing without "apps". There are literally thousands of cool apps in the iTunes store. There are a lot of FREE apps and some of the better ones you have to buy. I have one for birding. There are tons of fun games too.

We are getting the new Motorola Xoom with a Verizon plan. It costs $600 with a 2-year contract and a $20 per month data plan. Without the contract it cost $800. The reason why we are going with the Motorola is because we need a stand-alone, mobile computer that doesn't require a wireless internet connection or iTunes. Otherwise it would be an iPad all the way. HUGE Mac fan from way back in the 80's.

Argie's Wife asked if I could check with Jeanie's family about whether an iPad would be a good fit for her and the answer is... yes!

The facility she is in has Wifi... excellent! Lynne (Jeanie and Russ's daughter) and her husband would be able to help set it up and teach her how to use it.

Lynne asked me to let you know that the well-wishes from Winnipesaukee.com mean the world to her mother and to the rest of the family. The card we sent, showcasing our messages and pictures, is in a place of honor - right next to her bed. All of Jeanie's friends have commented on what a beautiful thing it is. I thank you again for pitching in to make her card so special and lifting Jeanie's spirits.

Okay, here's the skinny...

I'm going to coordinate the collection of funds and shipping the item to WinnDixie's family to set-up. There's Wi-Fi where she's at, so there would be no monthly data fee for a the 3G model.

Being upfront about this - because there's money involved I think that transparency is important. In other words, if anyone contributes to the iPad fund, I will (1) send a note acknowledging receipt of the money via email; (2) keep a running report here on the forum (anyone not wanting their name or handle printed can just be listed as "anonymous donor"; and (3) all receipts will be copied - any extra money will be returned to the donor.

Here's what we're looking at:
One iPad (generation 1) (refurb)
from Apple Store (HERE (http://store.apple.com/us/product/FB292LL/A?mco=MjEzNzcyOTk)).....................$349
One Ektopad Cover
from Amazon (HERE (http://www.amazon.com/Uzibull-F1-Black-Ektopad-Charcol/dp/B00445V8BC%3FSubscriptionId%3D14H876SFAKFS0EHBYQ02 %26tag%3Dhubpages0a8-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165 953%26creativeASIN%3DB00445V8BC))................. ...........$25
SHIPPING (FREE) $0
------------------------------------------------------
...........................................TOTAL: $374

Anyone wanting to make a donation, please contact me via PM or by email at jarg@metrocast.net. I will provide you with my mailing address, and I can take payment via PayPal, as I have an account (just remember there's a fee - so your donation won't go quite so far.)

In a separate post, I'll start listing the donations and our balance until we reach $0.

Finally, many thanks to all of you for chipping in and coming together as a community the way you do. My heart is truly warmed on this cold evening and I think WinnDixie will be elated by this gift. Thanks to all of you for making this possible!

Cate - You don't have to load on apps on the iPad using iTune - you can download/install directly from the Apps Store that's on the iPad. iTunes is just for the initial set-up and anytime you wish to sync the device. We've gone months at a time without syncing it. It does have to be charged - and can simply be plugged into a wall to be charged with an adapter. (That's how I keep my kids in one place with the thing!) :)

My husband is the Apple-purist in our home - I was the PC until my HP had a meltdown. I started using his iMac and was hooked. We have his/hers Intel Core 2 Duo iMacs, an iPad, iBook, and several iPods. I enjoy the intuitiveness of the Apple products and run Windows on my iMac when I need to "return to the Dark Side" for something... like syncing my cellphone.

As far as the apps and games for the thing goes, I highly recommend Scrabble, Angry Birds, Cut the Rope, Skype, StarWalk (constellations), Kindle (or Nook or iBooks) apps, Facebook, Pandora, GoogleMaps (the youngest Arglet's fav!), and Netflix.

You might want to consider the new iPad 2 out this Friday. It has two cameras and can be used for Facetime, a video conferencing program. This way WinnDixie can communcate visually with anyone she wants who has an iPhone, MAC or iPad 2.

1. IPAD2 just out is the way to go....why get older technology if you have the funds. Soemone said they could get an educational discount, so maybe that would even bring the cost down lower.
2. Really consider getting APPLE's service plan....first, the IPAD should come with a warranty. Apple Care is the extended 3 year warranty and it can be bought on EBAY for very short money vs. the cost in the store. They may have a special different extended warranty for the IPAD, so research APPLE's offerings first, as it covers hardware and software issues. I bought mine on EBAY and it cost 50% less but I still get all the coverage. APPLE is terrific when it comes to any type of support.

There's a few problems with the iPad-2: the cameras have really bad reviews, and there's few cases that will fit the new iPad-2. The cameras are worse than what's in the iPhones, from what I've read on several reviews now. I'd rather have a mic in an iPad than a camera, but that's just me...

One of the issues with the iPad is making sure that WinnDixie has a way to comfortably and safely hold on to the device. The case I had considered (see links in my earlier post) - has a special design that keeps the face of the device from landing on the floor if it's dropped. (It can't be face-planted, if that makes sense.) Making sure she can work with easily, considering the physical opportunities she has now, is really important.

I understand your points about old vs. new technology, but considering the lack of options for cases and the reviews I've read so far, I don't think it would be a good match - unless someone finds different info about these two things...

And AppleCare vs. BestBuy's plan... well, they're almost identical. I think BestBuy's plan was the better of the two, if memory serves me, and was less moo-lah.

Holy cow! I fail to drop in to the forum for a day, and BAM! You guys jumped into this thing like a kid doing a cannonball! :D

Am I too late to donate? Or is there still an opportunity to "pile on"?

It's not too late to donate, but we've already passed the goal mark by quite a bit... You are welcome to help out, or you may wish to hang on to it for the forum fest and donate extra then. On the other hand, another poster who was going to donate but then learned we hit the goal mark quickly, decided to give his donation to the local humane society... I thought it was a nice idea.

It's all up to you, Pep-pah! :D

Update:
I've put a call in to the local Apple Store in Huntsville, AL to ask about training or one : one support. I'm waiting to hear back. The gal I spoke with was very positive. I'm considering maybe one of the local colleges may have a PT/OT program or even technology integration - perhaps a student would be interested in helping our friend.

I've also called an Apple Training center in the area but found they don't do "off-site" training...

Also, I'm a member of the Seacoast Mac Users Group - I've put an email out to them to ask for suggestions or resources.

In the meantime, thanks again all y'all!

OK, so here's the plan: If it turns out there will be additional funds needed to pay for accessories, or training, etc. then I'll pile on. If it turns out there are adequate funds already in place, I'll hang on until Forum Fest. :D

5) Argie just suggested some headphones (earbuds don't come with the iPad) - might be useful!

Will Jeanie's iPod earbuds that she already has, work on an iPad too?

Yes - same jack (RCA-type jack), so they will work. I was thinking of something that might be more comfortable, money permitting. Earbuds aren't very comfortable, in my opinion, especially if you have small ears.

Do you know what kind of iPod Jeanie has now? Any chance it's an iPod Touch?

I completely agree about the earbuds. I have an iPod shuffle and I cannot stand the buds because they always fall out of my small ears. Paul bought me a thingy to plug it into the portable radio.

I just heard back - Her Ipod is not iPod Touch. It is the full sized iPod and not the Nano.

I am happy to report that Jeanie continues to make excellent progress!

Her catheter was sucessfully removed about ten days ago.

She is taking three meals a day and medications by mouth. She is still receiving the liquid nutrition through the feeding tube several times during the night.
When she begins to gain weight, the nightly feedings will drop away.

Jeanie is completely able to read and comprehend, but she is having a bit of difficulty when it comes to spelling out words. After a stroke, patients can suffer from something called acquired dyslexia or alexia. Russ has been working each day helping her work through this. Her cognitive tests were great and she can talk promptly - I am so relieved!

They are making progress with her right side. One of the treatments they have been using is Electrical Stimulation Therapy, also called E Stim. They have been getting good, strong muscle reactions. Contracting these muscles with this electrical stimulation, helps strengthen them and promotes blood supply to the area, which helps with the healing process.

Another therapy is where she is laid on her back and strapped onto a door-sized device. The head end is slowly lifted, standing her up. The first day, they made it to about a 75° angle. On the second day, she reached about an 85° angle. She made it to the 90° standing position during third session. Recently she was able to stay vertical for seven minutes.

Russ had a ramp built from the garage into the house and is trying to arrange a home visit for Jeanie. They are hoping to do this on April 2nd with a back-up date of April 9th. I hope it all works out because she is very deserving of a great reward.

When asked what they thought their long-term plans were going to be. Russ and Jeanie responded, saying that when it is possible, they wanted Jeanie to come home. The doctors thought this was a very good goal! I do too!

Russ does know about the iPad and thinks Jeanie is going to love it! He does have concerns about getting it away from her once she gets her hands on it though.

Yesterday I got to speak with Jeanie for the first time since Thanksgiving. What a happy day!!! :D As you might imagine, she was quite happy to be home. Russ had our surprise waiting for her in her favorite spot in their living room. Jeanie was quite touched and very excited about the iPad. She asked me to express her thanks and gratitude to all of you.

I must admit that Jeanie did seem a bit worried about learning this newfangled device, but I reassured her that it would be no problem and it will be much easier for her to use than a laptop. Unfortunately, there may be a delay in getting her set up with the iPad because her son in-law, who will be her guide, is heading out of town for a business trip this week.

It was absolutely wonderful to speak to her and she is just as inquisitive as ever. In just the few minutes that we talked, she asked about the Forum, my dogs and family. I told her how excited we all were for her wonderful progress, which really seemed to please her. She also asked me to say hello to you and is looking forward to when she can stop by the Forum herself.

Thank you very much for your support and generosity! You helped make Jeanie's momentous day even more special. :D

Jeanie, you are truly an inspiration! What you have been through and the progress you have made is nothing short of amazing. I am so proud of your determination and your perseverance. Keep up the good work!!! We're all routing for you.

To all the generous Winni Forum Folks:

Thank you so much for your incredibly generous gesture. Winn Dixie is currently enjoying using the iPad to watch a slideshow of the over 1000 pictures that were housed on her home computer. As you can imagine, being able to see pictures of family and friends as well as favorite places she's visited over the years has been very enjoyable and therapeutic for her. She is very much looking forward to learning more about all that the iPad can help her with. We hope she will be posting on the Winni Forum very soon! Please know that all your thoughts and prayers as well as this very kind gesture have meant a lot to our family during this challenging time.

Just thinking about WinnDixie and wondering how she's doing? Any chance she'll get to the lake this summer?

Rattlesnake Gal
06-07-2011, 02:21 PM
Thanks for asking rrr! :D

Jeanie is doing quite well, but progress is slow, which is not unexpected with severe strokes like this. I may or may not have mentioned this before, but the report that initially was sent from the hospital to the care facility, basically said that her long-term outlook was not good, (I think you can read between the lines.) so what she has accomplished thus far is nothing short of amazing.

She remains upbeat and super sharp mentally. She had a mild bout with shingles a few weeks back, but was lucky that she had been inoculated and it was on her stroke affected arm where the itch and pain could not be felt.

Unfortunately we will not be seeing WinnDixie at this summer's ForumFest, but hopefully next year! I am planning on bringing my video camera, so we can send her some video greetings from the fest. She will just love that!

A few weeks ago I sent her the 15 second recordable greeting card that I told you about with well wishes from all of her friends at Winnipesaukee.com. Russ tells me that she really enjoyed it and plays it several times a day. At least once a week she gets a Lakes Region postcard from New Hampshire.

Sadly, the weekly visits with her dog, Molly, have come to an end. Molly is rather skittish and after the initial happy reunion, she tries to leave. Jeanie realized that it was just too much for her and told Russ to stop the visits. That must have been a difficult choice for Jeanie because she adores that dog and really enjoyed her delighted greeting.

While there is no way to tell, the family and Jeanie is hoping that she will be able to go home within a three to four month range. At this point, it is still very unclear just how much mobility she will be able to get back. Recently in a PT session, she was able to move her toe on her affected right foot. We are hoping with time, more on command movement will follow.

Hopefully Jeanie will not be upset that I posted this mid-May picture of her!
Note that there is absolutely no drooping on the affected right side.

Russ was trying to schedule another day visit to home, but Jeanie is putting it off. Knowing her, she is thinking that she will be home sooner than everyone thinks... I sure hope so!

Jeanie…aka..Winn Dixie’s daughter Susan and I have become friends on Facebook. From this relationship, I have gotten updates on Jeanie. I knew Jeanie had grandsons in the service from her post below…(I am not good at quoting…so I did some copying and pasting)

11/12/2009
Sure can't say it any better than the previous posts here...but mine and all my family's thanks! I have two grandsons--one Army;one Air Force--currently serving, and I so appreciate the words of support, as do all of us...those with loved ones in harm's way, and all loyal Americans. Thanks to all Veterans!

She later posted to tell us that her grandson Scott was coming home……

07/01/2010
I have a 4th of July story to share: I think it was 1991 when my daughter and her military family were visiting us in Laconia. We decided to take them and their older son, Scott, who was eight, to the 4th celebration at Alton Bay. Those of you who've been can attest to this: those were truly an example of an American celebration in all its splendor. Crowds...we parked over on Rte. 28 ,and it seemed like we walked back from half way to Wolfeboro. There was cotton candy, flags, those light sticks that glowed in the dark, popcorn, a band concert...and--of course--the fireworks! They were wonderful. We stood down on the bridge and you could see the Bay full of boats that had come for the show. After each display they'd all blow their horns...marvelous. The grand finale was huge, and included an American flag. Scott came up to me, took my hand and said "Thank you for bringing me, Nannie, this is the best day of my life"! That is a memory I will always cherish!

Well, time has passed and there have been a number of "best days of his (and my) life"...and another one has just happened. On June 25th, Captain Scott Warnke arrived back in the USA from his year in Afghanistan! We are so thankful and appreciate all the prayers from everyone, that have taken place for him. I had to share the good news, and hope all of you have as happy a 4th of July as our family will!

Thanks so much.

Now, since I have been chatting with her daughter Susan, I have learned that Susan’s son…Winn Dixie’s grandson Tim in on his way home. Tim is in the Air Force and has been in the Middle East. He is a Loadmaster on a Combat Search & Rescue C130 and loves what he does. He was due home May 1st but unfortunately has been delayed a few times. He should be heading home on Sunday…and that would be to Georgia, where he is stationed. Shortly thereafter, he should have a 2 week leave to come to his real home of NH.

I thought I would post this for Jeanie, as I know she is very proud of her grandsons.

Jeanie…if you are reading the forum…we miss you and wish you well and thank you for the sacrifices your grandsons and their families are making.

Thanks eillac@dow for the update on Tim. The family is very happy to have him back on US soil. Jeanie and Russ are incredibly proud of their family and their roles in serving our great county.

I spoke to Russ last week and happily Jeanie continues to make forward, although slow progress, which is expected. The right leg and arm are both getting stronger. Speech therapy has been stopped as she has met all her goals. She does stumble slightly on five plus syllable words, but over all is doing great.

She and Russ have decided that it is coming time for Jeanie to be going back home. They have advised the care facility and are setting everything up for her move. Right now their target is mid September, but that obviously could change as there is a lot of preparation at home, setting up therapists, doctors and so on.

The facility has signs in various places that say WiFi hot spot. John, Jeanie's son in-law, keeps trying the iPad and his computer periodically in these spots, to no avail. The facility just says that they are working on it. Russ is very apologetic that our gift has not worked out the way we intended, but assures me that Jeanie is enjoying the ease of seeing all her photographs. Hopefully John can set her up when she gets home and settled. I can't wait for her to come back to us - hope it's soon!

I am planning on having a greeting card of some kind at ForumFest for Jeanie for her friends to sign.

I will also be calling her from ForumFest at 2:00 pm for anyone to say hello. (Russ asked for that time, so he may be there to help her if needed.)

I am also hoping to bring my Flip video camera to get some video greetings to send to her via DVD. (Maybe a card isn't needed?)

With all that they are dealing with, Russ and Jeanie have sent a check for our charity. Good people. I will be putting her name in on some of the prizes... I hope she wins something!

Keep sending those healing thoughts! They are much appreciated!

I just spoke with Russ. Jeanie is doing very well. :D She is in good spirits and is still making progress.

Today is her birthday!

http://i965.photobucket.com/albums/ae131/RattlesnakeGal/June%202011/th_Chocolatebirthday-cakeJeanie.jpg?t=1313774669

About 12 of her golf friends are throwing her a surprise birthday party in her room today at 3:00 pm. (4:00 pm our time.) :D

She absolutely loved the birthday card that we sent, which was signed by many friends during ForumFest.

Jeanie also really enjoyed looking through the New Hampshire book that she won at our annual charity raffle. Thank you Mr. & Mrs. Hermit Cover! :D

She also won Luky1's daughter's book, I Knew You'd Be Lovely, which she sent back home to enjoy when she is more settled.

Currently, her release date is set for Wednesday, September 7th. There is lots of stuff yet to arrange, but things Russ is confident that everything that needs doing/scheduling will get done.

Jeanie is thrilled with her upcoming release and tells anyone entering her room that she is going home in two and a half weeks. :D After spending nine months in the same room, who wouldn't be excited?!!!

Her physical therapy is progressing. Sporadically she able to forcibly push her affected leg out straight on command. It is going to take time to completely retrain her brain to make this exercise a regular on command occurrence.

Russ is sure that being home will help with her overall well-being and recuperation. I'm sure that Jeanie feels the same way too.

Jeanie,
I am still sending lots of healing thoughts.

Sorry it has been so long since my last update. I could have sworn that I had done a couple since over these past months. Oops! :o

Jeanie and Russ are doing quite well! She has been home since the beginning of September and is loving being back in her own familiar surroundings with her hubby and beautiful dog, Molly.

Russ has been amazing, getting everything set up and organized. At first he had help five days a week along with a physical therapist a couple times a week. He is taking care of the house, shopping, cleaning and cooking, keeping the daily helping hands to work solely with Jeanie. Recently they added Saturday help, so Russ is only on his own with her on Sundays.

Her speech has improved greatly over these past months. She only likes to talk on the telephone for short periods of time. I suspect she is self-conscious that her voice isn't perfect, but it sure sounds amazing to me!!!

She remains wheelchair bound, but is in excellent spirits. Her right side still very affected. I am sure it is frustrating to be making slow progress, but it sure beats where she was just one year ago.

Russ and Jeanie were able to go to their daughter and son in-law's home for Thanksgiving and Christmas, which pleased them all greatly.

She was quite pleased to hear a little Forum news today and asked if I could say hello to you all - hello!!! She thinks of us often.

I asked about the iPad this afternoon. They now have wifi in their home and their son in-law, John, is giving Russ lessons. He is a bit overwhelmed, but knows if he takes it a little at a time, he will get the hang of it, so that he may give Jeanie some lessons. With luck, one of these days we will get a surprise visit from WinnDixie. I'm keeping my fingers crossed! :D

Keep up the excellent progress Jeanie! We're still rooting for you!

Thanks Allie for asking about our friend and reminding me to post about what has been happening.
