Did anyone catch the clip on WMUR last night about the supposed treasure near the Witches? Apparently there’s been some speculation that a horse-drawn buggy fell through the ice back in the early 1800's. The carriage was supposedly carrying a large quantity of Spanish Gold bars across the lake when the buggy hit a patch of weak ice and fell through. The gold bars were stolen in a famous heist from the Abenaki Indian tribe. All 3 men transporting the load drowned and are still resting at the bottom with their treasure. Treasure hunters have kept quiet about the potential fortune until now. After years of unsuccessful dives, a man only identified as Kevin sought out the help of a Maritime Research company from Rhode Island to analyze the affect currents, wind, topography, and ice pressure could have on the treasure. The research was just recently published in a report and claims that the treasure could have drifted as far away are 3 nautical miles from the original location. Pinpointing the original location that the buggy fell through has also been tough to determine. The treasure is estimated at roughly $2.3 million USD.

Just curious if anyone else caught the clip or has heard of this legend. I for one will definitely be spending my free time diving near the witches in search of riches!

Would'nt gold bars be too heavy to move too far in a lake? I love old legends like this one, it must have some truth to it. My father used to tell of a hidden pirate treasure in Lynnfield/Saugus MA. that he heard of when he was a kid in the nineteen thirties. Always wondered if there was any truth to it. Good luck in your search!:)

I would spend my time on more promising treasure hunts. Got to go, with this rain there must be a rainbow around here somewhere.

Think the only treasure you'll find there is bits and pieces of boats that have made the unfortunate mistake of running through, not around the witches.

Well with the price of scrape metal these days the Witches may be a gold mine.

Ever notice that it's always Spanish gold that's involved in treasure stories?

The two best places for diving for boat parts is The Witchs & The Graveyard. I have seen people pull up skegs, lowers from outboards with props still on them, stainless props on propshafts, etc from The Graveyard area. Just depends where you want to start diving.

Hi Guys & Gals,
The story of the sunken treasure is TRUE! I was wondering when it would surface on the website. Here is what I know! It was a Spanish Galleon, in fact it was a four masted ship, named "The Black Falcon." Carrying gold, and other treasures. It mysteriously disappeared, with all it's valuable cargo. Now, from how the story goes, it wasn't "Lost" forever, but resurfaced again, about four or five years ago. It was discovered by a group of Survivors, from a plane crash (a commercial jet from Australia), on a "Lost Island." The plane went down and the survivors swam to an island, on Winnipesaukee, where they waited to be rescued. It was a mysterious island, where some kind of experiments were taking place (might be where that old sunken Navy platform is in Alton) but it was called the "Darmer Initiave." Anyway, some of the survivors found the Black Falcon, and all it's gold, and attempted to bring it back across the water (via a wagon) in the winter when the ice was thick enought to hold the weigth of the gold (or so they thought), On the way something happened, and a strange force, caused the all in the group, the gold, and The Black Falcon, to disappear again (it happened this past spring, and stories have it, a band of "Witches" grabbed them and pulled them under. That's how the "Witches" got it's name ) Now they are all stuck "Somewhere" on Winnipesaukee, on a LOST Island, and so as of this date, the Black Falcon, The gold, Kate, Jack, John, Hurley, Siebe, and the others remain LOST somewhere on an Island. Many have tried to find the island, but no one has, and returned to tell about it..so Good Luck... BUT Beware!

I thought it was just a variation of Guns N' Roses, a hard rock band.

The hell with the gold. I'm still hoping to find the missing load of Prohibition booze near Rum Point!
