NEWS:
This morning I was in my front yard spreading my fertilizer, with a hand held rotary spreader. It was very early (6:00 AM) and no one was around, or so I thought!
All of a sudden I felt a very hard blow to my head, coming from behind. I thought, "What the Heck!" then once again I was hit in the back of the head. WHAM! Then I saw him! A "Red Tail Hawk" must have thought I was some kind of animal. He just kept attacking me. So I struck back! I grabbed my trusty "Garden Hose!" and waited for him to swoop down again. Sure enough, my wife yelled,"Look OUT, Here it comes again!" SO I turned on the hose and gave him a blast of water. Up he went into the tree, and just kept watching me and that hose!. Finally, I went in my garage and found a "box" and tied it to my head (like a helmet) with bungy cords, and finished spreading my lawn fertilizer. Boy did I look like a "Geek!" I bet if anyone saw me,m they would have thought I was either drunk, or crazy! Anyway, my attacker got away, unharmed, and I have one splitting head ache!
I felt I HAD to share this comical story with all my friends here on the forum. Have a great summer, and watch out for Red Tail Hawks!

Too bad that your wife didn't grab the camera. Those would have made for some great pictures.
LIforrelaxin has a point - hawks usually don't attack eagles.
Good thing the squirrels didn't see you with that box on, they would have thought you were nuts.:emb:

What an interesting encounter you had with the hawk this morning. Your description of the event is so humorous, but I realize not so funny when you are the one on the receiving end of such a brazen and dastardly attack.
A couple years ago there was a large one perched in a tall oak tree near my home. He sat for a long while surveying the area and I ran to get my binoculars. As I stood on my lawn it took flight, came over and circled over my head a number of times. I could see the markings under its wings clearly - a beautiful bird. Guess I was lucky it didn’t get any ideas. At the time I didn’t know what kind of a bird it was, but the Forum experts here helped me identify it as a Red Tailed Hawk.
I wonder if the one that attacked you might have had a nest nearby? Perhaps the young had left the nest and were on the ground (or in the grass) close to where you were working. It may have been trying to protect its family from the early bird out fertilizing his lawn. Once you donned the box, he wasn’t about to mess with the guy wearing the weird hat.

I saw on TV the other day where the people counting the Terns out on the Isle Of Shoals wore a baseball hat with a thick winter sock taped down the middle of the hat. Mohawk style. The birds would attack the sock....:D
Great story. I would have loved to see video of that one.
I had a big Hawk grab a squirrel off my lawn last year. Sat on my boat and started to tear it up. But I waved my rake at it cause i didn't want squirrel guts all over my boat. It flew across the street and landed on a guys truck next door. By the time I had grabbed my camera it was gone.
I did see a Hawk fly across my street just the other day though, so maybe it is still around....

A little away from the Lakes Region; but, two years ago there was a pair of young hawks born in a tree out behind our yard. They stayed together almost the whole summer...got to be huge ,and there was not a chipmunk or squirrel to be seen all summer! They would perch side by side everywhere...to include our birdbath. Their hunting grounds were pretty much us and the houses right next to us. They would make the most horrible racket ( you wonder how they caught anything...but they did!!); however they wouldn't attack us or our dog at all. No longer here...so the world's largest supply of chipmunks has returned!
Someone please tell Eagle how to upload the pictures.

Received an e-mail today with pictures of two bald eagles attacking a duck. The duck escaped by diving and the two eagles collided in mid air
injuring one that later recovered. They were spectacular ...Wish I knew how to post pictures.
Tell you what......If someone wants to stop by the VK some morning and show me how to post pix.....I'll spring for a couple of breakfasts.....you'll need patience because I was dragged kicking and screaming into the world of computers......embarrassing....my 5 y.o. grandson can download videos onto his moms iPad.

Maybe you should change your forum name. He must have thought you were an eagle.
In all seriousness, possibly maybe one of her chicks had fallen from a nest onto the ground by you and she was protecting it. Othewise she would never have bothered you.

Hi Sal,
That you for that article. That WAS my neighbor's home he was working on in Suissevale. He was repairing the upper deck, when the Hawk got him. There are actually three hawk nests in the immediate area. I know one is a Red Hawk, and at least one is a Coppers Hawk, as they have BOTH attacked me, and my neighbors. They have got me a total of five times, and several near misses. When I posted this thread I thought it was sort of funny, but it has become a very dangerous and bad situtation. However, I think the young are possibly out of the nests now, and the attacks may be over....for now!

As posted by , 'The Eagle', we can take a new understanding away from his story... When Mother Nature gets involved, duck or otherwise, the best solution is to understand that we Do share this planet with Others...
Do we have boneheads? Absolutely Yes!...
Can we get along? ......? We had better think about it!...
Are we left with animals?... 'YES'!

Hi Trfur!
I am trying to understand the "meaning" behind the last part of your post. The first was easy, "We have to live with Mother Nature and be aware of what she can do." But the second part lost me.. Did you interprut the story to mean the repairman was "playing with fire?" when the Hawk attacked him? He surely wasn't a "bonehead," he was just doing his job, minding his own business, trying to make a living. He didn't "Provoke" the hawks, any more than I did. We were all attacked while just walking from the car to the house, or working in the yards, or sitting on our porches. We all love nature and the animals that live with us, and we realize they have "rights" and they protect their young as we do. Maybe I am reading this wrong, but would you expalin it, so I can better understand what you were trying to say? Thank you!
