Well whether you like him or not Adam Sandler was just on David Letterman promoting his movie that opens Friday. On Letterman Adam was wearing a shirt that said Rye Beach, New Hampshire. Apparently the movie was mostly filmed on Chebacco Lake in Essex Ma. In the movie the lake is called Amoskeag Lake. Since Adam cowrote the movie I would guess the name came from the Amoskeag Mills in Manchester. I heard that Adam wears a UNH shirt in the movie. I don't usually go to comedies, but I may go since it was filmed in New England.

And, yes - it's too much of a coincidence that the fictitious lake is called Amoskeag. Prolly Adam's doing.

The mills of Manchester were once the largest cotton producing complex in the world, with something of a peak output in the order of 500 linear miles of cloth daily. Distributed over a 6-day work week, that's enough ticking, muslin, etc. to extend from the Granite State to the Golden State.

The mills took their name from the falls. It's Abenaki for "place of many fish" - the best fishing between Pawtucket Falls and the Weirs.

For them in the early years of the republic, the falls were a boon and an impediment since most shipping travel was done via riverways.

After the completion of the Middlesex canal in Mass., a judge named Samuel Blodgett constructed a canal around the falls, thereby linking Boston with Concord, NH.

Because of the waterpower potential of the area (then called Derryfield), Blodgett proclaimed that the small farming community would become an industrial city that would rival those of England - the "Manchester of America" as he prophesied.

To evoke the spirit of the late great Paul Harvey, now you know the rest of the story.

Yes it was the biggest textile producer in the world and yes Manchester's name came from the other great textile producer Manchester England.

I worked in the Jefferson Mill, the one with the clock, for more than a decade, commuted from Moultonboro (90 minutes each way in good WX) back in the 80's/90's. No spindles going round and round, just electrons going from chip to chip and I made those electrons cooperate with humanity (as I saw fit...LOL).

I wound the clock many times... no there was no motor back then....geeezzzz, I did the crank, it was good exercise :)

we just saw the movie " grown ups" last night.

it is really funny... lots of New England & Manchester things in it. A light hearted and good movie to start off the summer.

Everything was so typical of five boys growing up.. I laughed alot !!
the place was full & all ages enjoyed it !!

If anyone remembers the movie a few years back, Click has a flashback depicting Adam Sandler as a kid playing on a beach on Lake Winnipesaukee.

"Grown Ups" is "OUR" lake! =D

He said on Regis and Kelly that he speaks at the Central Graduations of his nieces and nephews that go there...pretty cool.

I read online somewhere that he donated 1 million dollars to the Boys and Girls Club of Manchester in 2007... even cooler!

Also notable NH comedians are Sarah Silverman and Seth Myers (SNL) - they're both from Bedford!

Keep your eyes open for a landscape shot shortly after the families arrive at Amoskeag Lake. I am certain that there is a shot of Lake Winnipesaukee and Rattlesnake Island. Anyone else agree?

I believe Sarah Silverman is from Nashua. You are right about Seth. He is from Bedford and graduated from West High school.

Saw the scene on tv this morning. Yes, Adam says it's Winni. But given the landscape and water in the background, no way!

Thanks, I thought it was Lake Wini until it said Amoskeag Lake and it was filmed in Essex. They also went to Water Wizz on the Cape, and Woodman's Clam Shack in Essex, where they ordered burgers and fries (not on the menu I think!) It is a nice amusing family movie about young uptight middle aged families finding good family times on a lake. Winni lovers will identify.

Definitely a shot of Rattlesnake looking from Mt Major and then another one looking right at Treasure Island from the NW!

My family watched both Grown Ups and Grown Ups 2 this summer, along with What About Bob—fun movies, and I thought GU2 was hysterical. Really hit the spot for an easy, whacky movie to watch on the 110" porch projector!

We just watched a flick ostensibly situated on Mt. Washington called "Infinite Storm."

Based on a real-life rescue on Mt. Washington.

Shortly after it started I realized "Huh, this ain't NH:" I was right, it was shot in the Alps.
