View Full Version : Gulf Oil effecting lake crowds?
People are now predicting the oil to reach Florida soon and eventually up the east coast. Will some people change there plans from places like Cape Cod and head up to the lake instead?

I think it's too early to predict the effect on Atlantic coast.

There are reports of fear that the beaches will be soiled and people are canceling their vacations to southern shores. Hotel owners with clean beaches have turned to webcams, twitter, online discussions with guests that are there and guarantees to keep people coming, according to a CNN article (http://www.cnn.com/2010/TRAVEL/06/03/gulf.family.vacations/index.html?hpt=Sbin).
This is an opportunity for some target marketing. Resort owners, the local chambers of commerce and even the state could be buying advertising targeted at those who normally head to the gulf beaches in the summer. Maybe they wouldn't like it here, because we rarely hit 100, don't have much high humidity, the lake isn't salty and it is hard to find grits for breakfast, but it is worth a try.
Clips from the movie Golden Pond in the advertisements should get the point across of what we are about. Some will be attracted to the alternative and we could use a new variety of tourists.
