View Full Version : Sunfishes - Do they require registration?

I have a couple of old sunfish sailboats that I'd like to use up at the lake.

Do these need to be registered? I don't actually know the length of the boat (suppose I could measure it!).... but I figure the experts here will know the answer! I've sailed other sunfishes on the lake (belonging to other people), and haven't been "pulled over" for lack of registration, but I may have just been lucky.

Any ideas?

Thanks and Regards,

Steve

Registering a Sunfish should cost about 38-dollars at the MP headquarters walk-in window in Gilford, or about 43-dollars at any boat marina. If it has not been registered in a few years or more and you have no old registration, suggest you make a pencil rubbing of the hull VIN# located on the corner of the transom, and bring that paper and any bill of sale with you.

Most AMF Sunfish are 14' ish. They do require registration.

From my Sunfish registration a few years ago... IIRC, Sunfish must be registered and the annual decal must be displayed, but the bow numbers need not be displayed. I think there is a longer length requirement for the display of bow numbers.

There is sometimes limited space for the display of bow numbers on these smaller sailing vessels and FYI, the display of bow numbers on SAIL powered vessels between 12' and 19'-11" is optional HOWEVER, these vessels must still display the current years validation sticker in a clearly visible location on vessel, within several inches of the bow.

If you have room for the bow numbers it is best to incorporate them with the sticker to alleviate any MP concerns as to whether it is currently registered or not-they don't always see the sticker alone.

Hoist the mainsail mate.
