Why can't I see the video?

The still images you see when viewing the Classic WeirsCAM are downloaded to your computer like any other Web page picture and everyone can easily see them. The Motion WeirsCAM is more complicated and some viewers can run into problems seeing the video. If you have problems please use the Classic WeirsCAM, which uploads a new picture every 10 minutes.

Here are a few of the things that can prevent the video from displaying on the Motion WeirsCAM page:

1. The camera could just be very busy. It does not have unlimited capacity and is connected to the Internet through a cable modem connection like you may have at home. If the video streaming is being heavily used some people will not be able to access it. Please try again later or use the Classic WeirsCAM, which should always be available.

2. The video is controlled by a JAVA applet that is downloaded to your computer with the Web page. Some security software block the use of JAVA Applets and will prevent you from loading the applet and seeing the video.

3. The other thing some security and ad-blocking software will not like is that the video images and applet come from a different source (directly from the camera) than the Web page. Sometimes these programs block the video and applet thinking it's an ad or other threat. (Sometimes this also applies to the temperature display)

4. Extremely tight firewalls will do the same as the security software, blocking JAVA applets and 3rd party elements on Web pages. This is almost always limited to corporate networks that require extremely high security. Most home firewalls don't cause these problems.

Solving these problems can be as easy as adjusting your security setting or as difficult as convincing your IT guy to lower the security on your corporate network. An average computer on a home network running a browser with Medium security settings will have no trouble viewing the videos.

If all else fails.

If you try everything within your ability and still can't view the video please just use the Classic WeirsCAM. The method used to display the video from the Motion WeirsCAM will work on most computers and I can't be responsible or provide individual support if it doesn't.

Why is the image black?

Unlike the Classic WeirsCAM, which only uploaded pictures during the day, the Motion WeirsCAM is always available, even at night. If you can see the date and time overlay at the bottom but the rest is black it is most likely after dark. Try again after sunrise or view the last picture taken by the Classic WeirsCAM.

What is the Motion WeirsCAM and the Classic WeirsCAM?

The Classic WeirsCAM and the Motion WeirsCAM are actually one camera (with a built in server) that can do two different things simultaneously. While the camera is always available to feed video it also snaps a still picture every 10 minutes and uploads it to the winnipesaukee.com server. That allows us to continue to provide the current and previous 10 still pictures as we always have while adding the new video feature as well.

What kind of camera is being used?

The camera is a NetCam MP Internet Camera with an embedded Linux server...

NetCam - Network Camera

enclosed in a weatherproof case...

NetCam - IP-Addressable Ethernet Camera + Web Server

Do I need a high speed internet connection?

For optimum viewing high speed DSL or cable is recommended but the video should still work through dial up connections although the image will refresh less often.

How long can I watch?

Please try not to use the video feed for more than a few minutes at a time. This will allow others to see it too. If you do leave the video page or remote video window open for 10 minutes you will automatically be redirected to the site's home page.

Why isn't the video smooth?

When you see true full motion video on the Internet it is being streamed from a powerful, high-capacity server. The WeirsCAM camera's internal server and internet connection are not nearly as powerful. To compensate the camera's server is set to refresh the video image every 2 seconds. With Internet and traffic delays the refresh usually happens in 2 to 4 seconds. Sorry, that's the best we can do with this hardware.

How does the remote window work?

The Remote Window pops up a window containing only the video image. The most common use for this is placing the WeirsCAM image at the corner of your desktop while doing other things. The Remote Window also requires JAVA and you could have some of the problems mentioned above using it.
