Cardigan is one of NH's most climbed mountains - it has been a popular hike since the early 1800's. It has had a fire tower on it since 1904 - the present steel tower has been there since 1924. This photo barely shows the structure. The body is jet black and a creamy white above, with a remarkable peach tinge to the white breast feathers. The males have an impressive display performance, which sometimes results in competing males engaging in brief but intense battles. Perhaps the most unusual display behavior is their habit of vigorously kicking their foot backward, sending a large spurt of water 3 or 4 feet long into the air behind them. This is eye-catching, but biologists think that the females are more attracted to the male’s brilliantly colored red foot, which is probably the species primary sexual display. dcr Wed, 21 Dec 2005 07:22:09 -0500 Salmon Sunday '05 http://www.winnipesaukee.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=8504

by: Grant

1 comment Grant Tue, 20 Dec 2005 08:09:59 -0500 Rattlesnake Island and Mt Shaw http://www.winnipesaukee.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=8501

by: dcr

Description: A view northerly across Alton Bay from the Woodlands Road. dcr Tue, 20 Dec 2005 05:58:11 -0500 A Rattlesnake Closeup http://www.winnipesaukee.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=8500

by: dcr

Description: A look at the southeasterly tip of Rattlesnake Island.
