Description: USED WITH PERMISSION - Laconia Historical Society http://laconia.pastperfect-online.com/ This black and white photograph depicts the Orchard View Observatory atop Tower Hill in the Weirs. This building appears to be a nine story tower. It is sheathed in white painted clapboards with dark trim. There are 2 2/2 windows every other floor in each visible facade (one can see the northeast and southeast facades of the structure). The roof appears to be flat. The top two floors appear to have open window slots through which one can view Lake Winnipesaukee and the surrounding area. Painted on the northeast facade is: �Orchard View / Observatory. / Full View / Of / White Mountains / and / Lake Scenery.� The building is anchored to the ground via cables on each corner. There are three men posed on a large wooden platform at the base of the tower. One leans with his hand against the corner of the building while the other two sit at the edge of the platform. They wear hats, trousers, and jackets. In the foreground one can see the dirt track of Tower Street. The road is rutted and filled with large granite rocks. Along the side runs an unpainted board fence with four rails between each post. There are two visible fruit trees on the other side of the fence.
