Name Ideas for New Boat

We are about to purchase a new sail boat (see image below) and want to change the name. (and yes I am aware of the elaborate ritual we must do to rename a boat). We are looking for a name that is unique and exemplifies the beauty of the lake and the grace of sailing. (Nothing cute or puns or macho) Something that might be historical or native american. Something easy to say and explain. Maybe a native bird or weather related?

All ideas are welcome.

When I look at that boat and the location it will be docked as well as the person who wasn't afraid to pick up and move everything she owned all on her own to this little slice of heaven we call Lake Winnipesaukee, the name "Free Spirit" comes to mind...

I've found it's best to not plan on a name or search for one. One day you'll describe how it rides or describe the boat itself, etc and you'll say "...that's the name!"

p.s. this is why my boat is called "The Porpoise"

My neighbor on the lake, called his cottage 'Skungamug Tenega' I always wonder what it means. I can never find the two words in the dictionary. He was an English Professor at Dartmouth College.

My all-time favorite sailboat is named Beowulf (I love the boat regardless of the name). My boat was named by my kids and is a reference to Harry Potter books that my kids are VERY fond of. Perhaps something with literary roots like those would fit. Are there any books that really left impression on you?

Hey Cate LOVE the new boat best of luck!!! You CAN'T have "Summer Breeze" I think it's already on a Sundancer in MVYC I'm just being a Wise A** How about "Wind of Change" since you have moved to the lake permanently.

I was invited for a sail, I believe it was out of Salem harbor. Several of us were on board when my curiosity got the best of me, so I ask:

Some of these are wonderful names. Especially "Blow__. (not)

I really appreciate the one's that recognize my move up here as it WAS a great adventure. However, I am buying the boat with my partner Dianna, so the name needs to resonate for both of us.

We are doing the final inspection today with my good friend Dan (ChaseDawg) and closing on the deal. For those of you who come to Forum Fest, you can see the boat and hopefully the new name.

In this case, "CaDi". I also like musical terms, "del signo al fine" may be a little long, but "Caprice" (a quick little number) could work. Easy to find lists with Google, looking for subject matter, e.g. musical terms, rather than lists of names that everybody else has already used.

Very interesting, but as I am looking deeper into this Abenaki language, I find it all sounds rather odd for a boat name. A lot of "og" and "ug" sounding words.

My salesman (Jason Wiley) and finance guy (Gary Harbor at the time) at Irwin Marine, actually bought us the Seals and Crofts CD as a present to go with the new boat (10 Years ago now) I play it often and still really get why we named the boat what we did.

Reliance

It is about trust (buying a boat together) and being able to rely on each other as sail mates. It is also about being able to rely on the boat! We think it is a strong assertive name, but not too harsh sounding.

Look for Reliance sailing around Wolfeboro and hopefully farther north.

If it was an ocean going vessel and had its name registered with the Coast Guard, that requires filing paperwork and a pardon from the Governor. This is less than likely for a boat on Winni!

I'm thinking that because the boat is on the lake we may not need to invoke all those sea gods in the ceremony. In fact I'm thinking we may revise the naming ceremony quite a bit and just have a couple beers and have a toast to Mineola and any other lake spirits that may be lingering about...especially the spirit of "Squirrley Winds" ...you know...that sudden shift of wind direction that sends the boom flying across the cockpit and knocking unaware sailors unconscious?

I was looking around for some New England Native American tribes. The Abenaki were in most of NH. (according to my 2 mins of research)

Wampanoag from Massachusetts translations. (Where I grew up)

Sun (Soleil) Cone
Moon (Lune) Appause
Water (Eau) Nippe
White (Blanc) Wompey

I always thought Winni's water was really white and clean in a boat's wake or prop wash. I thought "Wompey Nippe" was kind of catchy. Here's a link to some translated words but the variety is somewhat limited. Maybe you can make something out of them.
