New Mercury 150 idle speed

Hello,
Have a new Mercury 150 4 stroke outboard that idles around 800RPMs does that sound right or is that low? Runs like a champ so just wondering.

I was under the impression it is supposed to be 650 RPM.

If anything, its high not low. I would use it for a while and see if it comes down a bit. These outboards are so advanced anymore it could be programmed to idle at a specific rpm for the first certain number of hours or something like that. My Yamaha F150 idles pretty close to 600 rpms for reference purposes.

Good to know--I'll single l double check tonight.

By the way, the engine is ridiculously quiet and cruises nicely at 25/maxes out around 41 on our new tritoon.

It really is a nice engine. I don't remember what mine idled at, but the electronics are sophisticated. I could tell I passed the break in period just as I was putting it away for its winter nap. Wake up time is very close.

I just looked quickly on line and found the owners manual for what I believe is your engine. Idle speed in neutral is listed as 650 RPM when fully warmed up.

You should have gotten a full literature package with all the owners information from the boat and engine manufacturers, if you didn't receive it I'd recommend contacting the dealer to get it. If you did get the package, the engine specs were listed on page 54.

We have a 90 HP Etec on our Whaler, it idles at 650 RPM in neutral but will automatically speed up to about 800 RPM when you put it in gear. It may be that Mercury has a similar feature. Good luck with the new boat, everything I've heard about that engine has been positive. Where it's so new, if you think anything is not normal I'd recommend a call to the dealer to be sure.

Just came in from a (cloudy) sunset cruise. Engine is closer to 700 than 800, so I guess we're fine. Like I said, it runs like a top--it just seemed to idle much lower than I would have expected.

The reviews on your engine are very, very positive. Should be a good one for a long time (especially in a fresh water environment).

It'll idle nicely down to 550 RPM in trolling mode. Great motor.
