Does anyone know how thick the ice is in the area between moultonborough neck and long island? Probably not safe to snowmobile on I would imagine.

According to this mornings news, someone already has.

It's more predictable than the weather (sorry Rose, I'm a programmer. Owed you that one ). The lake has just skimmed over, a small dusting of snow makes it look good, and someone goes in.

While my sympathies go to the victim and the family, why don't people learn?

For planning purposes only, anyone care to speculate about how long before the lake is solid enough to ride if the current weather conditions continue???

It depends where you are. There are certain ponds and parts of the lake that I would ride on. I would avoid the bigger areas that were blown open a couple of weeks ago. Out near Suissevale there is 8-10 inches of ice.

I second that Vita. There were tons of tracks from Ambrose cove over to the powerline trail in moultonboro. The entire bay (north of Ambrose cove) is loaded with bobhouses and sled tracks. I zipped across this area on the sled today and I am usually pretty conservative with lake riding. I'd shy away from larger spots as I had said in another post.

I rode the Neck Trail yesterday, plenty of snow not groomed yet) up to Corridor 15. Headed north, the trail was groomed and smooth and very hard. Looked like only one sled ahead of me on trail. Crossed the lake at Ambrose which was very slushy getting off the lake at the Marina. Wide area of open water around the docks.

Back on the lake and headed south to Camp Tecumseh. There were not many snowmobile tracks and hit areas of slush. You have to run hard on the lake since the surface was not hard and flat. Hit the lake again at Far Echo, very slushy getting on and track even slower than on the Bay side. Rode toward Long Island Bridge and gave the 800 a workout. Hit the shore at Oak Landing and left a trail of slush behind me.

It seems like the recent snow has insulated the ice from freezing hard. I would not recommend riding the lake particularly if a novice rider. Hopefully, colder temps coming will improve riding the lake.

Yesterday - The local trails on the neck were groomed by two machines starting at about 1pm. All tucker trails were groomed starting at 3:30 am and took about 10.5 hrs by one very dedicate volunteer and a riding partner for the second part of the run starting at 6:00am.
