Last weekend I saw an ad that the Winnepesaukee Pier is for sale. I think the price was list at 4.9 million. Is this the one at the Weirs? The aerial photo looked like it. What do you think the new owners might do with the pier?

They are "Brady Sullivan". I can see it now. They buy it up, turn it into condos (each with their own boat slip). Do ya know what a 2/3 bedroom condo with a boat slip in that location would be worth? Probably upwards of a mill. per. Could this be the beginning of the demise of the Weirs as we know it? Its gotta make you think.

It has been for sale for many years. From what I hear there has not been much interest in that price range. The current owner does not seem to be in a hurry to sell.

It is unlikely that anything will change in the near future.

The current owners are getting on in years and I believe they are just waiting to see if someone will make it worth while for them to sell. Otherwise I'm sure them and their kids will keep on with the place.

I'm starting a rumor that the Mohegan Sun tribe is looking at it, with an eye toward siting a tribal casino at the Weirs.

I have a standing search on Ebay for Alton Bay and Lake Winnipesaukee. I remember the Weirs Boardwalk being listed on Ebay either last summer or the one before that.

I wondered if it was still for sale or had been taken off the market. Guess I have my answer now.

The beginning of the demise? Don't get me wrong - I love The Weirs, but let's be clear what we're talking about - The Weirs is the Hampton Beach of the Lakes Region, not a quaint little residential hamlet.

I can think of a lot of worse things to happen to the Weirs than if part of the pier "went condo" (not that I think that will happen anyway).

That could be said of every inch of the Weirs at this point. Kudos to the Gringo and a few other places for making some much needed updates, but even the Winni Flagship Corp could make some improvements.

I am employed by Mohegan Sun. Last November Mohegan Sun opened Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs in Wilkes Barre, PA. They currently have 1000-1200 slot machines located there, and they pay the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania 56% of the slot take. It was reported yesterday in the NORWICH BULLETIN that the venture has exceeded all expectations by twofold. The Mohegan Tribe announced yesterday a large expansion plan for Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs. Mohegan Sun is also helping Indian Tribes in Washington and Wisconcin in their casino ventures.

I would love to see my Employer start a casino operation in the Lakes Region. When the Mohegan Tribe does something, they do it right !

Dont get me wrong I love Weirs Beach and this wont stop me from going there, but, i feel like I am stuck in the late 1980s or early 1990s with the way it looks, it needs to be updated, but I read the Weirs Action Committee likes the old fashioned look , so thats why it has not been updated, even though it could use a facelift.

Carguy, I agree that Mohegan Sun does things "right."

I have been to your casino in Connecticutt and it is, bar none, the nicest tribal casino I have been to.

Your tribe is partnering with the Cowlitz tribe here in the Pacific NW (near Portland, Oregon) to develop another top-drawer casino.

I was kidding about the Weirs, though: not enough room, or parking, for a tribal casino.

Maybe some kind of slot joint: substitute slots for skee-ball: voila!

As long as those skeeball games that I played as a kid in the 70's are there I am okay with any renovations. We bring our kids up there for vacation now and one of their favorite things to do is ride the Mount and then play games in the arcade. If it happens to rain all they want to do is go there. Funspot is now match it doesn't have the same atmosphere. The same games their Dad played when he was little. If a casino goes in I think the kid type fun will disappear.

Funspot has stopped updating their selection too even though they did re do the skeeball machines a few yrs back, I also love skee ball as well and love to play it at the Weirs or Funspot. Funspot has also gotten cheaper with the ac the last few years and the Winni Pier arcade is actually coller sometimes than funspot lol.

I'm strongly against MS or any other casino setting up shop at the Weirs. This is a family spot..always has been and always should be IMHO. Yes, I'd love to see it fixed up with perhaps an upscale restaurant maybe some shops but to put in a casino would take the family element out of it. I can't imagine the city of Laconia is prepared to deal with the ramifications of the Weirs being turned into a casino. MS may do it right but in all honesty I'd be proud to be a NIMBY in this case (NOT in my backyard!!).

Whether it is a family spot or a kids gone wild place is a matter of personal experience. In the the 60's and 70's we KIDS went alone to the Weirs. We played the Skee Ball and the CAChinko games and accumulated tickets until we coul trade them in for the fake carnival glass prizes that we KNEW our mothers would love.

It's tough to release the past, but my kids, who have been to Weirs many times (mostly by boat), haven't presented their mother (my wife) with her "authentic" carnival glass tray/bowl and so I think that there is a change in the attraction to the place. (The KIDS are now over 21 and so they don't go to the Weirs anymore); Its a Friendly's Ice Cream shop, where kids congragate: (You know what I am talking about, if you are from New England).

As I continue the rant, I am struck by the KID'S mantra, " There's nothing to do!" Soooooo, where do they go if the place becomes condo heaven?

Don't you think that Las Vegas is a family resort area? Well it is. Casinos can coexist with family entertainment centers and resorts.

IMHO, the beauty (and I use that word very loosely) of the Weirs is that it's stuck in time. But it's not stuck in the late 1980s or 1990s (you're pretty young Mets, aren't you?). To me, it's stuck in the late '60s/early 70's because that's when I spent time there as a kid. So much is the same - that scary lady who'll give you your fortune for a quarter when you walk in to the Weirs Peir Arcade, the skee ball, the Old West rifle shooting game in the Half-Moon Arcade. My kids have enough glitz and modernity in their lives. For us, the Lake is about escaping into a simpler life. When we go there, they gravitate to the older-type games, not the more modern arcade games. And if I have to spend $30 on skee ball every couple of weeks to give my kids good old fashioned entertainment (and they love it!), that's fine. I went through a period where I thought the Weirs were terribly tacky (as stated earlier, the "Hampton Beach of the Lake") and didn't want anything to do with them, but then I grew up. The Weirs are great. I would miss it terribly if it dissapeared.

Wouldn't the Abenaki tribe have something to say about the Mohegan tribe encroching on their territory? Although maybe it would work. In 1675, the two tribes joined together to form an anti-English front. However, according to http://www.dickshovel.com/moh.html
The Mohegan served as English scouts during the King William's War (1688-96), and during the Queen Anne's War (1701-13), they guided two expeditions into the upper Connecticut Valley against the Abenaki.
Maybe there are old grudges still in play.

I have been to Vegas it tries to be a family resort area but the old saying "What goes on in Vegas stays in Vegas" still rings to true.

I love the Mohegan Sun Casino I am there on a failry regular basis and it is much more family friendly than Foxwoods. We love to take in show or take the kids to see a Sun game. They love the buffets and have a lot of fun. As far as Kids Quest goes though the Wier's 50 year old machines work better than anything the have at Mohegan. That place needs to be more reliable than it is.
Now that I have dissed the place any chance you can score me some Kelley Clarkson tickets??????? My wife and 3 daughters want to see it badly and I'll be more than happy to spend some time at the Blackjack tables

Yes I am young lol I am only 26 so I can't tell you about the Weirs in the 1960s and 1970s my family started going there in 1980 with my mom pregnant with me and I started going when I was 7 in 1988 ( October bday). As I said before I am still going to be at the Weirs each summer as always and nothing is going to change my mind. I love the Weirs the way it is, but just thought a little updating would be fine like painting the railings on the boardwalk and painting the Mount Washington ticket area the roof looks horrible on the inside. I dont want the area to change and if anyone thought I meant that, I did not. I love it the way it is and just want a lil work done to it. I live in NY and love the lifestyle of the Lakes Region and always will.

The powers that be in Las Vegas tried to recruit more families to come to their fair city with a huge ad campaign several years ago. It did not work. Las Vegas is an adult playground, plain and simple. Am I saying a family could NOT have fun in Las Vagas? Not at all..I'm just saying in my humble opinion it is not known for being a family resort area. The Weirs is a spec of sand compared to the strip in Vegas. Any kind of casino would physically take over the area leaving little room for anything more "family oriented". I do have a life..i proudly call it "my family".

Don't worry, Mets. I didn't think you meant to change it and, yes, a fresh coat of paint would be nice. Many of us want the same things from the Lake: to be in a timeless place that gives us those same good feelings we had when we were children. That's why anything that changes the character of the Lake (like really fast boats) is so controversial.

By the way Mets, how's Pedro doing this year? He was a dad at my kids' school when he was with the Sox.

Read the response to the Vegas post! Ouch! I know where you're coming from, but I guess some folks can't depart from their past memories. A casino at the Weirs would be an interesting conversion.
