Since they open the Kennebec Steeps, I have yet to travel further up the road to the 'loaf.

Saddleback been my favorite mountain lately.

Default ....ten dollars-Tuesday, Jan 20-WV

Now that seems like a good value, what with 49 out of 51 trails open and probably some pretty good snow conditions and good sunny weather predicted....plus there may be some light dusting of snow overnight.

Saturday, Sunday and Monday's M.L.K. holiday prices were something like $75/day, and the Tuesday price, tomorrow-January 20 is ten dollars....not too shabby!!!

www.waterville.com

Today is the day that everyone has been waiting for; ten dollar skiing with all trails including True Grit and Stillness open, only Lower Bobby's closed because it has no snow-making, brite sun and about 20-degrees-calm wind. It took about two months to get the whole mountain covered with artificial snow but it has now been done for all the TEN-DOLLAR SKIERS out there .....hurray!

Way-to-go N. E. Patriots; 45-7 or something, vs the Indiana Colts, even if they did have to deflate the football?

Question of the day: What's the correct NFL air pressure inflation for the football?

Supposedly, it is 13 p.s.i. according to Wilson Sporting Goods who makes the football.

Wasn't that Bob Kraft sneeking around with an inflation needle before the game.....the Pats deflate the football....so's WV can deflate their price....down to the minimum $10....which is still more than the hourly rate they pay most of their WV lift and snow employees....but who cares ....sunny & warm skiing today for just ten bucks while a cheeseburger in the main lodge will still cost you seven dollars.

Default ....when the Pats win today!

When the Pats win the super bowl today, skiing will be free at www.waterville.com on Tuesday, Feb 3 .... and that's what it says in the website so it is probably true!

.....good golly....if skiing the whole mountain is really free on Tuesday then maybe I'll feel guilty about it and actually buy one of their yummy cheeseburgers for 7.63.....just to help them out with their large electric bills.......like wow....free skiing on Feb 3....let's go Patriots.....beat Seattle....and go extra heavy on the mayo!

....no, on second thought, one can buy about six+ cans of good quality tuna at walmart or hannafords for 7.63 with no 9% tax built into the price

Default Tuesday Feb 3.

Times like these when all the 'freebies' and discounts are midweek. I can't wait to retire! Shop is close today so I have to use personal/vacation time. If WV was free today, you know where I will be!

...you are incorrect! ...... according to www.waterville.com the lifts are all free on Tuesday, Feb 3, 2015 if the Patriots wins the Super Bowl....which they did when Serena Williams intercepted the ball in the end zone!

...you know you can go to www.Waterville.com and with a couple clicks, under recent live-cams, see an hourly web-cam photo of the infield base area, last shot at 11:21-am, that shows how many people are queued up at the Valley Run lift, and how many of the main quad lift 4-seat chairs are loaded to get an idea how many are at the mountain...and it actually looks pretty empty right now....despite the unusually low price of a no-charge lift ticket.

Will go see what's up at the www.Loonmtn.com website to see if they also have this similar type of photo?

Unless I missed it, Loon does not have an hourly web-cam photo in their website?

Default Saddleback in Maine

has a Super Bowl Special tomorrow. Free skiing and riding.

Saddleback and Waterville are some of the few family owned ski areas. Looks like family owned areas are a nice bargain compered to the big conglomerates!

On 12/18/14, the 65+ ski free was not advertised. Now it is. In the past it was available all season. In April I will be 65, time for some great free skiing until I hit 70 and Gunstock will be free.

Default Crotched Mountain

Advertised $14 all day all lift tickets on 2/14! There is usually wind blowing from Canada so the wind chill will be a huge factor! If you have not skied CM lately, it's been drawing a crowd from Gunstock and Wachusetts.

Yikes $74/2 = $37 is less than $48. Now I am wondering how I ever got a degree in engineering

Ten dollars to ski today, Tuesday, February 24, at Waterville Valley. Last Tuesday during Massachusetts school vacation week, it was $75/day, and today, Feb 24, it is just ten dollars, and most likely, what with the cold temps, it will not even be very busy(?).

Default Sunday afternoons

I read somewhere ski resorts are giving steep discounts for Sunday afternoon skiing. By the time Sunday afternoon rolls in the slopes are battered by the weekend warriors. So I can see why.

$38 to ski WV today, Tuesday, March 10, according to waterville.com which might be an incorrect price because the Patriot/Temperature tuesday discount days were said previously in the website to be priced from 10 to 30-dollars ....... hmmmmm?

Looking at channel D121-2 on twc, am seeing many, many empty four seat chairlift chairs glide past, going up the slopes ...... empty. Like, why have a discount if no skiers show up...... maybe because the discount info is tucked way deep into the website info. Have to wonder if people get charged the full tuesday $65 at the lift ticket window if they are unaware of the discount $38-price today ......... hmmmmmm?

Default ....new closing date at WV

Instead of closing on Sunday, April 5, as scheduled, Waterville Valley will stay open another week through Sunday, April 12!

So many showed up to ski the winter conditions for just one dollar, yesterday on April 1, and purchased so many cheeseburgers for $7 + .63 tx, that management made a very republican decision to order more hamburger paddies and will keep it all going for an extra week .... plus the conditions are almost like the winter as opposed to the springtime ..... bring it on buddy! ......and hey.....would you pass me the ketchup!

Default April 1

Yes the conditions were fantastic! Blue bird day! All trails were open as well as all lifts except the peak chair. Glad I did first track as by ten it was like the weekend crowd arrive! It was not spring skiing but the sun made it perfect!

Next stop is free skiing on May 5 at Sunday River!

Default ......too slow!

If WV management had any brains they would get rid of that summit High Country chairlift by selling it off in the winnipesaukee.com classified, and replacing it with a retro, old-fashioned rope tow, powered up with a 1948 grey Ford tractor, where the rope tow rope loops around the big tractor tire rim .....with the big rubber tire removed off the tractor rim ..... just like back in 1961. That original 1966 summit chairlift has got to be the slowest moving chairlift ever constructed in the world history of snow.....plus there's some real good ski terrain up top High Country 'cept no-one seems to go there cause the lift is just too slow. How slow? ........ too slow!

Plus, riding a rope tow way up top of the mountain with those super views could be just as much fun as skiing it down, so's you get a double good run ...... up-down, up-down, up-down .... etcetera....and every once in a while .... some low-intermediate will lose their grip and slide back on the rope while track'n up the steeps, and take down the four riders behind on the rope line.....just like in the cartoons.....ho-ho-ho.....hee-hee-hee ....ho-ho-ho ... and no claws allowed on the rope tow!

Default Or maybe...

Maybe the Sununu's should just sell out to Vail Resorts so some real ski lifts can replace all the other lifts that have seen their time. I am sure there are lots of Eastern skiers who would welcome Vail and Epic Pass to come to NH.

Go to WV-ski area between April 13, 2015, and November 20, 2015, and you will be surprised to see it is impossible to spend one dollar, either 4-quarters or a paper dollar because there's no place to spend money what-so-ever. There's no money..... like absolutely zero.... what-so-ever ... being made..... plus the WV-ski area has no second-home, vacation real estate business attached to their ski biz either which is a huge money-maker for other ski areas.

The only thing happening up there in the off-season is the Mt Tecumseh hiking trail, a WMNF hiking trail just to the north of the ski area that climbs from the top of the ski area parking lot to the 4002-ft summit of Mt Tecumseh, and that is a no-fee to park your car hike.

So, with no money being made for about 8-months, and no attached real estate biz, it is probably not a magnet for a big-money ski operator.

.... not even a $7.63-cheeseburger, or a 50-cent pay phone......nothing! ...... about the only thing for sale in the off-season is a season pass on their website

Default ......... think snow everybody!

Thursday, December 17, 2015: Christmas is just one week away, and the skiing conditions are totally terrible what with the warm temps, and rain. Waterville Valley, Gunstock, and Sunapee have all closed operations for today due to the crappy-wappy weather and lack of snow cover on the trails.

So's .... where-o-where is the winter?

As much as I want to break the skis out I really wouldn't mind if we didn't have a ski season this year. Also prices are still way too high considering we haven't seen an inch of real snow this year. If they were cheap I would hit the mountain for a few runs just for S's and G's but not at the prices they're asking.

Default Lift ticket deals

This is one of the best discount programs I've come across. Lots of mountains, including the apparently beloved Waterville Valley... also Bretton Woods... among many others...

The golf course area of Waterville Valley, elevation-1800', finally got enough snow last night, maybe 3/4" snowfall to make everything look very white, and that definitely is a wintry look. Most years, this occurs on November 8, when the area gets a permanent winter white snow cover, but this year it was December 19.

So's, how long will this winter white be lasting now? Is it good to go for the entire winter, or just a 'here today-gone tomorrow' weather phenom?

White snow ....... what is this stuff?

With Christmas Eve Day expected to be at 68 degrees here in southern NH, I can see that winter white disappearing and I fear some other ski areas may have to shut down again. Not looking good for Christmas/New year's week for skiing!

Default .....Gunstock's 1400' vertical drop in question?

http://www.laconiadailysun.com/opini...azil-12-18-320

It would not be too surprising to me to be true. As a rule of thumb, I usually take the 'trails open' number and divide by three to get a realistic number of trails open for all ski areas...not just Gunstock.

The Waterville Valley ski area is situated on 4002-ft high Mt Tecumseh, while the top of the skiable terrain is on White's Peak at something like altitude 3800' and they call it a 4000'-er ski area.

The ski area business is very competitive, and their websites like to present a very rosy picture.

Totally agree with the /3 on trails . Although 30 trails might be open lets get serious 10 of them are useless unless your under 7 years old or have never skied and than probably another 5 are washed out with crowds.

Or one trail connects with another in a straight line and happens to just have another name, that is another trail open!

Well, looks like Sunapee had to shut down operations once again. But, Pat's Peak is open and Sunapee is further North.

Seems most other areas were able to stay open through the warm spell.

Even with this storm coming I don't see skiing being up and running for a few more weeks. The resorts that "managed" to stay open good for them but lets not kid each other open and closed is basically the same thing right now. With out 2 or 3 good storms I can't see how they are going to build enough base to have solid coverage to justify the prices.

I agree. We normally go skiing over New Year's and this year with the way it falls it was going to be an extended weekend of skiing, not now. The prices for what is open are not justifiable.

At Waterville Valley, www.waterville.com , what's coming out of the snow wands or snow guns is most all water spray because the temp is 32 with relatively high humidity. Even with all the snow-making improvements and equipment up-grades, the laws of physics still apply here, so today, January 1, 2016, you get 9 out of 50 trails, 43 out of 220-acres, 11-inches snowfall total to date for the 'early season' price of $57 ........such a deal! And, the trails conditions are probably very over-optimistic.

Colder temps are due on Monday, Jan 4, so it looks like Christmas week was a very big, lost vacation business week ..... a lost ski Christmas....... boo-hoo!

Default ... skiing in the rain?

8-am, Sunday, Jan 11, and it is a warm 38-degrees and very moist Sunday morning here at Waterville Valley: the main lift opened at 8-am, just as the predicted all-day long rain starts to be raining ..... ugh ..... pitter-patter ....raindrops are falling from the ski.....just a little rain, but very dreary looking ...... oh well .... no lift line and almost no skiers loading the lift here what with skiing in the rain ..... supposedly, more normal below 32-degree temps will be here all week long, starting tomorrow, on Monday? It looks like three skiers got on the first two chairs, at opening when they remove the rope gate, and now after about five minutes of empty chairs go by with no one on the lift.....looks like a deserted early morning start....there's no one skiing? So many empty chairs on the chairlift on channel D121-2 twc ..... think I'll go take a drip-trip walk around the golf course.

.....oopsie-doopsie.....my bad....wrong date....today is the 10th.....thanks for pointing that out.....in my world it just don't make all that much difference....and taking another look at channel D121-2 twc, the main lift has now been shut down no doubt due to the heavier rain, and wind, or both rain and wind ...... wonder if they refund today's 77-dollar lift ticket price.....such an expensive deal when you know that just 1 1/2-mile away, starting at the Depot Camp parking lot, the U.S. Forest Service has about six to seven miles of free-to-use WMNF xc skiing and hiking trails....and what u need is a $3/day or $20/year car parking sticker?

I just thought that you might want to know so that you wouldn't miss out on some store sale because you showed up on the wrong date.

Default ......... new sign at Exit 28?

Just noticed a new sign on Route 93-north just before Exit 28 for the Waterville Valley Resort, formerly known as the Waterville Valley Ski Area. It's a Dept of Transportation sign that shows what's happening at Exit 28 ..... after 49-years....WV-Ski Area was started in 1966....the state has gone and put up a state sign there....... omg!

The sign says '12-Waterville Valley Resort' which means it is 12-miles to get there, and I liked it better when it was just called a ski area, and not a resort.

U know the WV Ski Area needs all the business help it can get ..... so this sign is probably very welcome ..... skiing there on a Mon-Tues-Wed-Thurs-Fri is so dead ....it's like you got your own private ski area, or something!

For starters, WV needs to go back to burning real wood logs in their two main lodge fireplaces, and fuhgetabout those propane faux wood burning gizmo fireplaces. If the State of NH can burn real wood up at the Cannon Mt ski lodge fireplace, then WV should be able to go real wood, too!

Default If the B empty put : it...

It's going to take more than throwing on a few logs to get things fired up at WV. First they need to open up more ski terrain. Loon, Bretton Woods and Cannon left WV in the dust.
Second they need a heated bubble six pack of sort to replace the main quad going to the top, a lift to replace the high country and north side lift with one lift of significant verticle providing better early season skiing, a village to base gondola (how many years now have they been talking about this one?)
Third they need more capital (someone who has 30-40m to spare). Time to sell to someone who can transform this area into its full potential and execute on the original vision.

Default Ski area futures

The current climate for investing in a ski area seems risky.
1) There are more poor snow year seasons than there used to be. This means increased cost for snowmaking and grooming and fewer skier visits.
2) The boomer generation, which helped expand the industry over the past 50 years, is aging out.
3) Many recent college grads, the replacement customers, are too in debt to afford the high cost of equipment and lift tickets.

There are some good mid-week discounts among NH ski areas, but weekend and season pass costs are still a bit out of range for many ski bums.

For me ....I would just be happy to see the High Country, vintage 1966 chairlift get replaced with a 1946 style rope tow that runs around the big tractor wheel rim of an old grey Ford farm tractor. Riding the old rope tows up the hill was more fun than skiing down what with the rope tow slide back, pile ups and unexpected happenings.

These new super luxurious ski lifts are just way too luxurious and kill all the fun stuff.

Helmets ....... only wussies wear helmets for skiing ......skiing is not like playing ice hockey!

I think one thing factoring into less people skiing is more people doing back country and touring. I myself this season have only went to ski resorts maybe 15 days , 6-8 of those days were out west in ideal conditions and the rest of the 25-30 days I've been out on our own.

I don't plan on throwing away $70+ to ski garbage groomed trails but want to be outside on my skis regardless. This pushes me to do some back country exploring, whether its a day/weekend thing to Mt Washington, VT, ME or even just a quick 30 minute hike up Mt Major its nice to enjoy the outdoors and nature. The industry changing and making touring bindings and skis much easier to use and more affordable is also helping people get outside of the resorts.

Helmets I support though. For me skiing trees is where I like to be, too high of a risk of hitting a tree to limit the fun to me by staying on the trails. My second thought was after college, I paid over 100k out of pocket thanks to not getting any "tuition assistance" to educate my brain, it would be stupid not to insure it with a $40 piece of plastic.

Monday, March 14, 2016, and Waterville has gone from 48-trails open down to 35-trails open since last Wednesday, March 9 ...... what a difference five days can make

Looking at the hourly web cam photo that gets posted every hour at www.waterville.com you can see the patches of brown grass on Valley Run and the Chute and Lower Bobby's.

This week is the week when WV fills up with lots of expensive cars and suv's with license plates from Canada; Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, & New Foundland ...............Oh CANADA!

Default ..... ski free at Cannon continues!

Hurray for the NH House of Reps who voted yesterday to continue free mid-week skiing at www.cannonmt.com for seniors, age 65+ ........ after all, this is the 'Ski Free or Die' state.

And, to think they were seriously thinking about raising the price to five dollars .....omg ....... Cannon Mountain ....... unlike many other NH ski areas ......this is a real mountain as opposed to just a big hill.

It's really hard to believe this free skiing is truly a reality ..... I had no clue .....was unaware.....and will definitely use it because Cannon is a real good ski mountain, and totally free is my type of a price.

Does 'free skiing' really apply to the big tramway, or is it just for a low intermediate chairlift? Plus, Cannon actually has a main lodge fireplace that burns real wood logs, as opposed to a propane faux log fireplace.

VIVA LE CANNON!

Default Free Skiing at Cannon for Seniors

I believe free skiing for seniors at Cannon does include the tram, but you have to get your free ticket from Guest Services at the Notchview bldg. at the Peabody slopes. However, the tram does not run Tuesday thru Thursday. You can still get to the top from The Peabody Quad, then the Cannonball Quad.
