Default Strange birds

Yesterday morning, two large birds caught my attention near the opposite shore from my bay (around 1000 yds) I thought it was unusual to see two herons travling together until they started divebombing a mother loon and her two chicks. Each time they made a pass the mother and chicks all dived together.I tried to get my spotting scope focused but they were circling and diving too fast and I never got to positively identify the two birds. They were quite large and seemed brown at that distance. After several attempts they gave up and flew diectly into the trees on the opposite shore and the loons seemed no worse from their close call because they hung around at that spot for 15 or 20 minutes until "dad" joined them and they all swam away.I've seem bald eagles and osprey and these were just as large....I was puzzled by what appeared to be their brown color.

Could they be young eagle? Young eagles are brown.
