Default Butternut Farm

Butternut Farm in Farmington is a great place to bring the family. Many varieties of apples to choose.

Default crop down this year

I picked some Macs on the 15th, cortlands should be available now.

Warm weather in very early spring gave rise to early blossoms. Then came a hard frost about on normal schedule that killed off the early blossoms. I was told at the orchard where I picked that up to 80% of the crop was lost in this area. So don't wait too long to go picking.

Default Don't bother with Stonybrook...

Sadly, Mother Nature gave us a very small apple crop this year and then many of you came picking so we are now all picked out and the orchard is closed for the year! Look forward to seeing you in 2013!

Check out Cardigan Mountain Orchard in Alexandria. We've been going there for the past few years.

Just rec'd this e-mail from Butternut Farm, 195 Meaderboro Rd, Farmington, NH.

"I just wanted to let everyone know that the apple season here at Butternut Farm is going by quickly. Going into this weekend we still have the following early season varieties available: Cortland, empire, Jon a gold, and Acey Mac. The following "late season" varieties will begin harvest on Saturday the 22nd: Mutsu (crispin), Ida Red, Golden Delicious, Northern Spy, Snow Sweet, and Aztec Fuji. We are selling a lot of "Drops" of all the above varieties and there are still some good ones of the Macs, macouns, and Gala. However none are on the trees.

I do expect apple picking to be wrapping up by the weekend of sept 29th and 30th. Way too early I know but thats all we have this season.

Pumpkins still look good and the selection will be great all weekend and into this coming week.

I'll be in touch again next week for an apple picking update. This weekend of the 22nd and 23rd will be the last "Good" weekend of apple picking. By the 29th the selection should be greatly reduced.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Giff"

I went to Butternut Farm this morning and picked @ 20 lbs of Cortland Apples.
The picking was real bad and I had to ask for a ladder to get the ones that were left on the trees. If you like drops then you could get all you wanted.

There were more people at the farm then there were apples. When I arrived there were cars parked on the sides of the road before the entrance of the farm and they even had two people directing traffic.

I have never seen it this bad at this time of the apple picking season.

However I was treated real well by the staff at the farm.

We are saddened that the late frost killed off much of the local crop. It's a lot of work to manage a good orchard and this must be a hard year for local growers.

We normally pick a half bushel of cortlands about now and another in about 2 weeks. My wife did make a pie today with fresh cortlands that she got at the Alton Hannaford store, the display said grown in Barnstead. Not as satisfying as picking our own but I'll say that this pie with a scoop of Giffords vanilla ice cream is pretty darn good.

We ended up going to Smith's orchard in Belmont instead of Stonybrook, who were picked out. We got a half bushel, but you really had to work for it. Apple pickers were a must. I would guess that this weekend was it for Smith's.

Went apple picking yesterday in Hollis and alot of trees were bare. We were wondering if it was an early season. Got alot of good Cortlands but they were all up high, trees were pretty much picked over

McKenzie's in Milton is a good destination. They're right off from rte 125 just a ways from the NH Farm Museum. In addition to PYO, they have tractor-pulled wagon rides and some other activities.

Go on a Saturday when the Farm Museum is having an event to make a full afternoon.

Default Question about Apples for sale at local farm stands...

I know this thread is about picking apples, but i have a question on apples for sale at farm stands:
Where would be the best place to go to get a nice variety of apples?
I usually go to Apple Ed's on Moultonborough Neck Rd. for Macs; but I'm not sure how much variety he has now (i know he retired a few years ago, but there are usually still some apples at his road side stand)...
I will need other apples in addition to the Macs - I am doing a fall appetizer which calls for different types of apples so that i have a variety of fall colors on my platter (I'm thinking Red Delish, Golden Delish, Fuji)
Any thoughts?
*Does anybody on the neck know what kid of apples Apple Eds has right now?

I worked with an apple grower in my winter job once. He said that different apples "come to sugar" at different times after they have been picked. I thought that was interesting but I've forgotten the details. Maybe you could have samples of all those apples you listed (or more) and have an apple tasting party.

Default Apple picking and stands

I took a drive today to Acton Maine. Nice ride on 109. There is a very nice orchards (Smith's) that has pick your own or buy from their stand . They have homemade pies, crisp and cider and and ice cream bar next door. They have plenty and seemed not be be effected by the spring frost this year.

I found out that there are three (3) apple orchards in Acton, Me.

ROMAC, Smith's Red Apple Farm and Kelly Orchards.

Does anyone know of an orchard near the lakes region that grows spencer apples? I used to be able to get them down near the Mass border but now I'm a permanent resident up here and I haven't seen any. I realize there won't be anything left on the trees by now, but maybe next year?

So... I went to Apple Ed's on The Neck and he did have lots of types for sale! I choose Golden Delicious, Empire, Macoun and Honey Crisp (my new favorite). Talked with Ed and he gave me 2 free "samples" of a newer type of apple - Mutsu, also called Crispin - very tasty!
So for my appetizer at this weekend's I sliced up 2 of each type and spread them on a platter and also made a pumpkin dip. Here's a picture:

That looks scrumptious!
You have definitely arranged a visually appealing platter that has a very well-laid out table that showcases the perfectly cut apples that surround the pumpkin dip.

The table cloth and cookies add to the well designed apple dish presentation.

Nice job!

I love Spencer's too. Hard to find. Use to get them in Hollis. Would love to find some up here!

Posted today on Cardigan Mountain Orchard's FB page:

What a beautiful fall day today..... We have PYO Cortland,Empire + Golden delicious apples as well as hot mulled cider, coffee and cider donuts, we always do our best to have enough apple pies available, but if you know you want one its always a safer bet to call and reserve one. Enjoy this perfect fall day everyone!
