Default Eagle on water

Saw a mature eagle today on the water off of Mile Island (where the buoys narrow on approach to Center Harbor). We could not get too close and did not have binoculars in the boat but the eagle appeared to be standing on a rock right at water level. We watched the bird for five minutes and it did not move much. I have never seen an eagle at water level before. Is this unusual behavior?

Default Sky High Drama

Monday morning, we watched a crow chase an eagle high above East Bear Island. It kept after the larger bird for a couple of minutes. Our neighbors reported seeing, earlier, an eagle raid a crow's nest, carrying off one of the baby crows.

It is normal behavior.

Eagles are always looking for an easy meal. A dead fish will do, but chasing an Osprey carrying a freshly-caught fish is more fun. (The Osprey almost always loses and, during the chase, the Osprey will vocalize his/her distress).

If the Eagle is flying rapidly in what appears to be "on a mission", the Eagle has seen a successful Osprey catch, and intends to intercept the now-burdened Osprey from the Osprey's intended destination.

Otherwise, Eagles soar high overhead in a free "lift" from upwelling warm air currents to extend their range for food.
