Am I in trouble?

I have had a boat sitting without being turned over for a few years due to personal issues at home. It has been winterized and gasoline has been treated. Its a 2001 8-cyl 200 HP Volvo engine. Also do you know of anybody that is good for getting boat running.
What am I in for to get it ready to use.

I would think if it was winterized, nothing built a nest in it, and with a fresh battery and fluids--replace as much of the old stuff before starting as possible--you should be good.

Most or all of the gas may have to be pumped out and replaced. Too long a time for stabilizer to protect it. There would be a disposal fee.

New oil in engine and drive.

I would have a marine mechanic go through the engine and drive, you never know what might have corroded. Maybe as simple as the thermostat, maybe more serious.

There are many on the forum more knowledgeable than I and could add their recommendations. I would say all the gas should be drained; treated or not, if it's been several years, it's way too old. If it's a carbed engine, you may want to have it cleaned, jets. etc. to remove residue. Points, plugs, cap/rotor are probably all needing replacement. In other words, a complete tuneup. I would certainly replace out-drive oil and impeller. An oil change for sure and most likely, I'm sure you'll need a new battery. I would also check other fluid levels; IE steering etc. As I said, others can chime in to add to the list. or correct me on any points. Good luck.

The finest marine mechanic in the Lakes Region is Butch Galivan who spent years as head mechanic at Shep Browns. Now retired, I know he still loves a good challenge He lives on Meredith Neck Road. I am sure you can find him listed.

Why not charge or replace the battery ,roll the dice and fire it up?
Do it right on the trailer with some flusher "muffs" and then run some carb cleaner or gas treatment through it.
Worked for me once with an outboard that had been sitting for two years.....hey,you never know, and if it doesn't work you've still got the option of following all the other suggestions.

Open the gas cap, take a whiff of the gas. If it smells like gasoline you are probably ok, if it smells like varnish you need to clean out the tank and lines and carb if applicable.

We did this as well...after the boat had been sitting in our driveway for 5 years. No issues whatsoever.
