What year was the earliest ice in?
Drove by 19 and 20 Mile Bay. Both had ice a good ways out. I don't ever remember ice starting to form this early in Dec.
When was the earliest official Ice In? |

We had a lot more ice here last November. By November 29 most of the coves were frozen. The water temp here was 38 this morning. We reached 38 degrees on 11/14 last year. This year seems pretty average for temp and water height. Here's a link from last years thread...scroll down to the end of November. http://www.winnipesaukee.com/forums/...ght=Water+temp Last edited by PaugusBayFireFighter; 12-07-2014 at 06:57 AM. |

It's kind of hard to say when ice in actually is anyway because the bays usually freeze over first, usually skimmed along the edges at least by Thanksgiving and it is usually the 3rd week of Jan before the broads are iced in. So if you are talking about total ice in, it is not usually until that 3rd week in Jan.

Not at all. On the Home Page of the site, in the left column under "Articles - Information", the first link is "Ice-Out Page".

No early ice-in for 2014
Those that were thinking it would be an early ice-in can forget it. It was looking real good, but the rainstorm this week took it all away. The forecast calls for warmer than normal till Christmas, so we are back on track for a normal to new-normal (ie, January) ice-in for the parts of the lake that freeze first.

Define "Ice In"...
We all know when Ice Out is. And Emerson makes the call.
So when is Ice IN? We have some options to choose from. How about when the Mount can't make her run due to ice? How about when the island folks (and this hits close to home for me) can't make it to their places. That one is kind of hard to figure. How about when the islanders can make it to their places over the ice. Again, hard to figure. My personal favorite is when all of the public ramps are closed due to ice. This can come and go due to weather daily though. Remember I said ice, not snow. Last week I used my snow blower to clear and sand the ramp at Center Harbor so that I could pull the old Misty. I should have waited. I could have still made it! Misty Blue |

ice fishing
There has been someone ice fishing out on Wicwas (right off of rte 104) for the past couple of weeks. Has a hut out there already. I don't get it....it has not been all that cold for a long period of time...its just a fish. I would wait.

I hope not too many are on the ice yet. It's weakening.
A week ago, ice had started to form along the shore on Merrymeeting. No evidence of it now. In fact there was a bass boat fishing in front of my house for most of the afternoon yesterday. I was in Wolfeboro today. Back Bay had been almost completely covered in ice a week ago. It now has large areas open. Similarly, Rust Pond was mostly covered last week. Now appears to be completely open. The ice has retreated with warmer temps this week. I doubt anyone should be on what's left in most places. |

Don't know much about diving but this area is well over 100' deep. Can someone dive that deep without ultra special equipment??

When I was a kid, I always heard the story about how divers went down by the Broadside of Rattlesnake and would never go back again. No one knew why.

A combination of lime, irrigation and aeration with lots of TLC year round. The family business is landscaping so having a crew at your disposal makes it much easier to maintain. That part of the property gets abused all summer. It's seeded every fall and seems to come back nicely before hibernation. |

It won't be long now. Merrymeeting Lake was wide open as of last night, no traces of ice anywhere. This morning it is mostly skimmed over as far as I can see (about 1/3rd of the lake). I suspect it won't hold if the wind comes up. But with well below freezing temps forecast for at least the next 2-3 days, I suspect things will begin to lock up.
Please stay off the ice! It still won't be strong enough in most places for a few more weeks. |
