Default 15% Ethanol nightmare

BoatUS Magazine recently had a blurb about the heavy-duty lobbying going on now by the ethanol industry to bump ethanol to 15%; If you think you have problems now wait until 15% hits the pumps.

BoatUS is perhaps the most serious lobbying group we as boaters have aside from the NMMA. The EPA has not done any-as in none-testing on 15% ethanol according to BoatUS but is being pressured big-time to approve it on that basis anyway.

Much like voting, you have no right to complain IF you didn't at least vote i.e. make your voice and position heard. We may lose this one, but not without a fight.

That being said BoatUS provided a direct link to the the EPA to make your position clear on this-I just did it-super easy via the web.

Another 'feel good' law that is badly needed after they screwed everything else up.

Default If you think you got problems now...

Just wait for January 2010 when federally mandated "B2" heating oil becomes the standard. That's 20% ethanol and 2013 it then changes to "B3" which is 30% ethanol. You can't begin to believe how well you old trusty oil burner going to run on that stuff. Just a few years ago #2 oil contained 144,000 BTU/gal. today its 138,000, come January it be degraded to 125,000 and on B3 down to 115,000. If you,re thinking of buying a new oil boiler/burner you'd better be looking a new low "NOX" burners they're the only ones that can handle the B2 efficiently.

What a nightmare this is going to be...

Default An Idea

The only option seems to be 100LL Avgas. (100 Octane Low Lead) If someone could bring it (install a pump) at the dock...For Sale: OR you could drag it in cans from the airport..It might be an option, although 100LL is not cheap...and certainly overkill for just about everyone for regular use......it might save a real engine hassle the next season.

Just run a few gallons of 100LL through the engine, and carb, and leave the remaing 100LL in the tank for the winter....Run most of the Ethonal out of the tank first.

OR you could try what I call... "Miracle Grow" ....ie: the latest "Snake Oil" from Benny's.

NOTE: As long as Ethonal engines are RUN every week or so during the season, it may not be a problem. Just store it with 100LL in the carb and tank.

Avgas is very 'dry'. It will scuff your rings and pistons. If you use Avgas make sure you mix Marvel Mystery Oil. I use it in my drag car "Wailin' Wedge".

All gasoline is 'dry' since they took 'lead' out of the formula.
