Talking No more early out

As I sit here this morning, looking out at a perfectly calm lake, I've decided on my New Year's resolution -- never again will I take the boat out early. Next year, the day after Christmas, at the earliest!

Default On the Lake today

Through the good graces of hardy friends.... we were out on the lake today. It has been two months and I really needed a lake fix. The island was beautiful!

Default Christmas Cruise?

Do I hear a cruise on Christmas DAY? Did you happen to go down Alton Bay to view the fire damage? Did the Sea Doo make an appearance since it may get more use than the snow mobile?

Default Fire

I drove through Alton Bay in the car... not by boat. I did take some pictures. I will try to post later. The air is acrid... around there. . It is hard to tell about the damage. It is much worse on the lake side than the street side.

No Christmas Day cruise for me... I will be in the Seattle area... then again they have lots of water there!

Default ...wondering what to do?

Is today the right time now for me to take my boat, 30' dock, & boat lift out, or should I wait till sometime in January or who knows when? On the one hand, today I could go boating. Or, I could do about half of the removal. Holy smokes.....it's a tough call. My boat is a 1974 Starcraft Starchief with an outboard, and removing it is easy, as long as the town boat launch at Brown's Boat Basin isn't iced in. Until about five years ago, I'd waste a lot a time trying to get three guys lined up to haul the dock sections and boat lift. And now, through the wonders of using a crank-winch tied to a tree and some ten foot boards, I've figured out that the whole removal can be done by myself, all alone. My latest removal day so far was on January 5, I think, if I remember correct.

Who knows when it will freeze? The weather could change overnight, and descend into the deep freeze, or a foot of snow could fall? What a dilema? It is a seasonal dock, but I have never heard of anything like a seasonal dock non-removal fine, but who knows.

After all, I have bigger things to worry about, like paying my incredibly expensive property taxes so that our Senator Judd Gregg can have his $850,000.00 lottery win and not have to pay NH even one penney in tax. Now, that is everyone's problem!

Default Dock removal time is now

There is skim ice flows moving in front of our place again this morning. After the warm weekend, I don't know how its possible. Perhaps flowing out of a bay. Anyway, years ago, I left a stubborn dock pole in the mud, thinking it would be OK until the freeze. A very thin skim of ice formed one night, and when the wind came up the next day, it bent the 2" iron pole. The momentum of thin ice is impressive. I suggest that as soon as there is the possibility of ice, you should get your crank-up dock out of the water, because having it bent at the shoreline hinge would be expensive to fix.

Default hard to believe, but...

...we were up at the Lake to bring in the New Year with some good friends. We were looking across from our place on Moultonboro Neck at the barely visible fireworks in Wolfeboro at midnight, when what to our wondering eyes should appear but....A BOAT. At 5 minutes past midnight. Working its way through The Graveyard at a reasonable rate of speed. Amazing.

I am going out tomorrow to Mark but won't be on my own boat. You may want to ask Watermark or Island Support if you can catch a ride, they both still have boats at Glendale in operation.

Talking Boated to Cow Isle on Thurs

What a great day! Had to break through some skim coat of ice but all in all it was a blast. First time boating in early January for me.

Hazelnut,

Sounds like quite an adventure. I would like to get out there sometime this winter, but my boat is winterized. Do you think we'll see any ice this year? What about the fishing derby? I am hoping for an early start to the season at this point.

Thanks.
