Canvas snap replacement tool
I did a search and it doesn't appear we have discussed this. I need to replace several snaps on my boat canvas (annually). There are several tools available out there from $40 to $150. What, if any, of these tools do any of you guys use?

I do it the hard way
I bought a kit at the hardware store that contained: snaps (both M&F ones), a holder and a setting tool (much like a drift pin) and a punch. The kits range from $5 to $15 depending on how many snaps and tools. It's easy to use, just mark where you want the snap, punch a hole in the fabric, assemble the parts, place it in the holder and smack the setting tool with a hammer and your done. This method can be a bit of a struggle to use on a large piece as you have to have the holder on a sturdy surface or the floor, but it works...
Rich from the Moultonbough Canvas shop had a nifty tool that looked like a giant pair Vice Grips that held the snap and he just pressed them on without taking the canvas down. I'd have that tool if I did it more than one or two snaps a year. |

I have a $32 plier style tool kit that I got at West Marine. Works perfectly and remains on the boat all the time.
Looks like this: Here's the full link: http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs...oductId=268124 |

I have the same tool as Dave R sans the rubber on the handles, I inherited it from my dad. It has worked well for two generations.
For replacment snaps it works great every time. For new snaps on new material, it works better if you can punch a hole in the material first. |

Thanks guys,
I had heard good and bad about the West Marine tool, but for the amount of times per year that I will use it, that appears to be the best solution. BT

Snap Tool
I bought a kit at West Marine for about $12 that had 4 plastic sleeves that fit over the jaws of a Vise-grip. (Vise -grip not included). It works the same as the tool mentioned earlier for $34. It works great. I've owned 4 boats, & have used it on all of them over the years. It does come with about 12 each of the snaps & fittings. Good Luck!
