Mink?

I spotted what I was later told was a mink on Rattlesnake while there on vacation last week. I was guessing mongoose (anyone remember Riki-Tiki-Tavi?), or possibly a weasel.

I was in the water and no one was around, of course, so no pictures.

He was popping in and out of the rocks on the breakwater.

Probably a mink which is a member of the weasel family.

We have had mink along our shore most years, the breakwater is a favorite spot. Two years ago we got so see mother and kittens.

Last year the grandchildren were fishing on the breakwater and pulled in a small fish which flopped around on the rocks. A mink popped up and snatched the fish; the kids watched in wonder. After we told then what it was, feeding the mink evolved into a game for a while.

We often see them along the shore of Rattlesnake Island.

The summer it hung out at our lot wasn't fun for my Cairn Terrier, a dog bred to kill rodents. Thankfully, Mac never caught it because both animals could have gotten hurt badly in a fight.

When I would kayak with my boy, I had to tether him to the boat. He jumped in one day trying to get a mink that was on the shore.

Last year they would quite often visit the tiki bar then scurry over to the Mullen's hot tub. I think they like to party!

I may have seen one myself last Saturday am in Alton Bay as we were leaving. We went down to the boat for one last morning run around Rattlesnake and Sleepers

before loading it on the trailer and heading hom and I saw a brown animal duck out and make his way along the shore. I first thought it was a muskrat since we get those at home, but he wasn't as long.

Well, I wasn't exactly kidding, my last memory of what a mongoose looks like is from a cartoon I saw as a child (Riki Tiki Tavi). And mongoose are natural enemies with snakes... and it was on Rattlesnake Island... so my mind jumped to mongoose.

Your post prompted me to google some small creatures; minks, weasels, otters, mongoose and muskrats.

I am now 99% sure it was a mink.
