Chipmunk Problem

We love chipmunks, but have one that is destroying our front brick walkway tunneling underneath and causing the bricks to sink. We have tried everything including mothballs, ammonia, cayenne pepper, and animal repellent spray. We are now using a Have a Hart trap with peanut better and strawberries. It's been two days and no results. He/She could care less about any of these deterrents. Everytime we cover up the hole, the chipmunk digs it again throwing the mothballs all around.

We would appreciate your help/advice on how to "relocate" this chipmunk in a humane way. Thanks.

Make sure you have the right trap. Traps that catch Red Squirrels won't keep a Chipmunk inside.

Chipmunks love sunflower seeds. Put some seeds under the "trip" plate. There's a chance that if you successfully relocate the "guilty" Chipmunk, others will raid the empty burrow of the cache of winter food. After a few days, you can plug the tunnel.

Keep in mind that chipmunks are very high-energy critters, and shouldn't be kept in the trap for even an hour. They can die of stress, so keep the trap covered against light.

I have a cat that can catch them , HIS NAME IS ALICE COOPER AND DOSENT
KILL THEM ...

I agree - it works for us and then I immediately relocate them a mile or so and so far so good! They will undermine driveways etc if left to reproduce in your yard! Good luck!

I tried a Hav-A-HART. After 3, the rest wised up and wouldn't go near it except the one that trained with Harry Houdini...

After repairing the cars' wiring a few times I gave up and started rat-trapping them and using a pellet gun. Hopefully for you it really is just one because I know I enjoy having them around when they aren't damaging stuff.

Bought a Havaheart trap for chipmunks yesterday. Hope it works. They are tunneling under our walkway and under our bulkhead.

I have a beautiful 18 Year old cat named Jezzie. She killed a vole once. That was her only big kill that I know of!

A BB Gun can help thin the herd. It get more humane as your aim improves.

Chipmunks are cute but they are a nuisance. A 5 gallon pail half filled with water covered with sunflower seeds and a board for a ramp is the best way to get rid of the little critters. The chipmunk sees the seeds and jumps into the bucket not knowing theres water underneath.

I usually trap between 12 to 15 a year. Use 2 Have a Heart's. If they are alive, I transport them, otherwise just dispose of them.
I've been doing this for 8 plus years up at the lake. I don't spice the traps with anything as thay have developed a natural smell from the previous chipmunks. Location is important. If you can, place the trap close to a wall so it is easier to go through the trap than around.

Thank you all for your advice. We have successfully been using a Have a Hart trap only in the same problem location and only when the hole has been redug. The ones we caught were only in the trap a short time before being relocated all to the same area.

i have traps with a funnel on top.put seeds inside. they go down thru funnel and can't get back up. you have to set funnel just right and put a rock on top next to it or they will push trap aside to get seeds. don't leave them in their to long or they will die i was away for 3 days and came back to find 2 dead ones. take trap away for at least a mile, then release them. have gotten about 40 so far. if you let them roam around all winter, they will destroy your lawn under the snow

Eastern chipmunks enter a restless hibernation state in the winter, not moving from their den. They munch on food stored in the den till spring.

It would be ground moles that wreck lawns under the snow.

I love chipmunks....we had several that were pets when i was young.....we had one, "crooked tail" named for the kink in its tail it got trying to get out our screen door. It used to climb up our pants and shirts and go from perched on our shoulder, down into a shirt pocket to fetch a peanut, and back to the shoulder to shell it and stuff it into its cheeks.......awesome little creatures...

This works like a charm! I do it every spring. They can't resist the seed.
I have a lot of rock walls so I seem to get over run with them every spring. I went to war against chipmunks a few years ago when they burrowed under my pool liner. Those little suckers can do some damage.

You may wish to try Brian DeNutte of BD Wildlife Nuisance Control. Tel 603-581-5059.

I believe he is a state-licensed trapper.

We, as well as friends of ours, have used him for woodchuck removals and he is great. He has Have-A-Heart traps, bait, etc. and no catch, no charge.

In the real world outside of trapping, he works at the Gilford Dept of Public Works.

A good guy and an excellent resource.

If you can find them. Has worked for me for years. The alternative could also be .22 bird shot.

If you trap them and move them, you are moving them closer to someone else. If someone else traps them and moves them near you, you've both accomplished nothing.

I agree with gary. YOU want to have bird feeders, then you have lots of varmints. I've had em chew car wires, get into a trany ($900)repair. Get into the house doing damage too. Mice,chipys,squirrels, bear.Great answer, move the problem near some one else. We should DO that, then we could build that PIPELINE! Oh wait, then WE didn't build it anyway?

You can't get to the fruit from that nice safe spot, clinging to the trunk of the tree......
