Default Three Military Planes 7/17

Did anyone see the three military planes flying over the lake eastward bound around noon on 7/17? They were fairly low, but looked pretty awesome!

Saw them too. Looked like they came over Long Island heading toward Rattlesnake. Definitely Cool!

SOoooo..?? First step in identifying an airplane. Is it a Jet...?? Does it have propellers..?? HOW Many engines does it have..??...

The options are: ONE Engine. TWO engines. Or FOUR engines. Do you thinK it's OLD..??

The Collings Foundation fly around the country every Summer/Fall and spend 2/3 days at various airports for people to see...And you can ride if you have the money. Their planes are WWII Vintage. Usually a B-17..(4 engines), a B-24..(4 engines), and a B-25..(2 engines). They usually make a few low passes around the area to alert bystanders that they will be landing at a nearby airport and will offer "tours". Laconia is one othe Host airports.

Default modern

I was having lunch on the lakeside deck at Shibleys when I saw the 3 aircraft. They were not vintage. The were gray air force (or air guard) planes. I saw them fly in from the north (like they did indeed come from Rattlesnake) and disappear over the hills to the east.

What struck me was that they were silent - i could hear no engine noise, so I could not tell if they were prop or jet. They were not tankers, A-10s, bombers, or fighters. They looked to be cargo/transport planes.

I think you're right. Probably the C-130.

By aircraft standards, C-130s are "old":

In recent years, one was filmed while losing a wing (and crew) in mid-flight firefighting duty.

Exactly right!

They flew in formation and were about five miles distant from me and my sailboat. (No, there was barely a trace of wind yesterday, which gave me a lot of time to look around. "Even saw a very dark Bald Eagle for the fifth day in a row).

They were silent.

Although '50s-vintage, they are mostly used to haul (and parachute) very heavy loads (like Abrams tanks), for in-flight refueling, as "gunships", and can land on most any kind of field. (And take-off, too ).

C-130s is what I think they were—from 1951, just seven years after the last PBY was built:

A modern formation:

More.

Some C-130s have been used in firefighting to replace the aging '30s-vintage PBY firefighters. (A "plug" for an aircraft highly-favored by some here)

Its been a few years since I've seen any military activity over the lake. Several years ago a tanker refueled helicopters up and down the broads...very cool. One other time a B1 bomber flew around the lake a few times. That was a shocker. My thought was that the pilot's family may have been vacationing on the lake and that was his way of saying hello. And every now and then you'll see A10's swooping over the lake. You can tell they're A10's because they sound like flying vacuum cleaners.

If they had Four engines (Turbo Prop) and looked like cargo planes they were likely C-130s. Quite common around here. We have an ANG base at Quonset Point, RI with a half dozen or so C-130s. They as often as not fly in pairs and can be seen doing "steep turns".. @ over 45 degree banks prior to short landings and imediate take offs called "Touch and Goes". They have a very Large and Tall vertical tail that visually dominates the rear of the plane.

I remember years back there was an anphibious troop type carrier that people charted out of MA that landed in the broads and would pull up to the W.Alton sand bar. It was always great to watch, they'd set up a few lawn chairs on the wings and bar-b-que. In the afternoon sometimes needing a little push out take off and head back home.
