Staying with a local company can be a good thing for service but I would check ADT to see if they have a local service dispatch in your area.

FYI, ADT, Brinks, et al would be my LAST choice for security. You'll pay too much and not get anything for it.

Find a good local company, buy the panel outright, and pay for monthly monitoring, which should not be more than about $10 or $12.

looking at a simplysafe wireless system at the moment. not terribly expensive, easy self-install, and monthly monitoring (optional) with no contract for $14/mo.

Most insurance company's offer a discount if you have a alarm system (professionally) it may worth the call to them before you do a self install. As far as the "big" companies they do tend to be more on the monitoring but its all in the negotiations.

We have the adt pulse system at home. Works great but the monthly fees aren't cheap.

Default Total Security

I looked into total Security, great guys and they do great work from what I'd heard both on this forum and in the area. Although at this time I'm unable to invest in a camera system when we do we will go with them.
Someone I know was one of those who originally started up the company and although he did leave and start up his own business doing a different line of work he still had nothing but praise for the company.

Brinks and ADT are ripoffs.Check this site out http://www.frontpointsecurity.com/ I have one of their systems and it is great.....light money, easy to install and good monitoring.
Also, check this out simplisafe.com/simplisafealarm .....best monitoring deal out there.Haven't used them but it looks good.
If you want to go local,I like Total Security.I have two of their systems and am happy with their service. When you call their office you actually get a person on the phone.
Also, google up "security systems complaints" and you'll see what I'm talking about with Brinks and ADT

no, you really can't. and i like the fact that monitoring is optional and there's no contract. this is more for the times when the wife is home alone with the kids. we kinda live on the outskirts so our house would be an easy target. at least with some type of audible alarm, it could scare someone off as well as alert her/us that someone is in the house. plus we can activate monitoring when we go out of town or on vacations etc. and for the price with a self-install, i think it's a pretty good deal.

Default Home Monitoring Systems

I checked into the big security companies, and down here, TimeWarner Cable is into the business as well. I went with a self monitoring system (total package was about $300) and hung up two motion sensors, and two door sensors with garage door sensor as well. My daughter sets the system with an access code in the morning and it will call me if there is any sensor that goes off.
The auto dial feature calls my cell phone, and I can check the inside camera on my smartphone to see if there is a real problem. It also has a remote that can trigger a panic call to 911, so that works for anyone in the house who hears a breakin.
I have only gotten one call so far, don't know what the problem was but it called me when I was away.
My neighbor walked around the house to make sure all was well, and I reset it with no problems.
You can even put in fire and smoke sensors if you want.
IMHO, you can pay the security companies the monthly fees, but do they really do any more than what my system does.
Of course, having good neighbors is a godsend as well.

For these systems you need a landline phone, correct? What are you using?

I wouldn't turn monitoring on and off when your not planning on being around. For what to save 10.00 or 12.00 a month? Not worth worrying about in my opinion. Also alerts folks that you'll not be home, kind of like stopping mail delivery. There's crooks everywhere!
