Default New water temp record

The increase in water temperature this week has been pretty amazing. The readings are far and away the highest at this time of year in the 10 years of tracking on this site. An 11 degree jump in the past 5 days. I've been getting similar readings on my setup on Merrymeeting.

Happy Memorial Day swimming everyone!

We saw the water temp on the shady side of the dock at 75 degrees on Wednesday, the hot day. It will be interesting to see how the water quality reacts to the early warmup. Already, I'm seeing green slime color on the bottom in areas where there used to be just sand.

Default Deceptive Temperatures

I'll bet it's only the top few inches that has reached 70 degrees. The Lakeport Dam is reporting 66 degrees today.

Default It's warm - I fell in

While assisting work on a jetski lift I lost my balance and fell in the lake. I think the last time I fell in I was 4 years old!

I was shocked at how warm the water was... I waded out deeper than waist high and was not cold at all. I am usually cold in the water so was quite surprised. I stayed in for a while to help with the lift because it was so warm.

Usually when the lake gets warm, it turns, and gets cold again for a few days. I wonder if that will happen early as well.

With this year's early "Ice-Out", I'd be expecting a record year for algae growth.

In August about 13 years ago, our area had huge mounds of algae clogging lake water intakes. This problem even extended into "Leaf-Peeper" season!

The "fix" was a side-perforated 1-gallon milk jug over the end of the pipe. The half-dozen perforations can be roughly cut to about 1" in diameter—each hole. The jug then is wrapped with window screening and held in place with a bungee cord.

Problem solved.

Today's reported water temp is again 70 which probably makes it the earliest-warmest 70 degree Winnipesaukee water report in the last twelve thousand years or for as long as this forum has been recording water temps. Some years, it don't hit 70 till about July 10 or 15. Compared to 60-degrees, 70 is very tropical. There's a huge difference between 60 & 70 degrees.

Default Millfoil

Has anyone noticed that the millfoil seems extra early as well. All the slips in the marina are loaded.

Default Deeper Water Temps

I was diving last weekend. The temp at 30 feet was 54 degrees on The Lady of The Lake. Mid-summer temps are usually upper 60's / low 70's. Also dove the Pile Driver Barge near Weirs Beach. Temp at 47 feet was 52 degrees, but that is also the usual mid-summer temp for that dive site.

I think you are right. I was speaking to someone who went to the milfoil school (for pulling it out of the lake) and they said it IS early this year.

Mother Nature always seems to figure out a way to even things out, plus/minus a few weeks.

The cool/cold evening temperatures this week, along with the passage of time have resulted in water temps that are now almost normal for this time on the calendar.

I must say I've enjoyed the few extra weeks of comfortable swimming!

Called the 7:55-am recorded message down at Lakeport Dam in Laconia and the message today says the water temperature continues to be 78-degrees. If it gets up to 80-degrees, that will be at least an eleven year high, as the highest temp in the records which started in 2000 is 79 which was on July 21, 22, 23 in 2005. Betcha tomorrow's temperature number from 603-527-0071 is 79 or 80 due to the......you guessed it......a little drum roll here......... for........ the heat!
