Default Ragged Island and Boat trip info. request

Hi Folks....

I was planning a boat trip this w/e, and would like some info. from the Forum.

Was planning to visit Ragged Island (between Cow and Long Is.), at the suggestion of a fellow boater friend of mine. I have never been to this island in all my years on the Lake. My friend told me there are several public docks available at the island for anyone's use, and the island is actually some sort of wildlife preserve?

He also said there was an area around the island where it is sandy and shallow, making it ideal for swimming and rafting? On Bizer chart I see a number of rocks/shallows on East side of island. As I said, never been to this island and would like some more info. about the area, hazards, etc.

Also, as part of this trip plan to go through the 'Hole in the Wall', around Little Bear Island, travel through the Long Island bridge, then possibly anchor somewhere between Markers 62-63 (West Point to Downing Shores). Suggestions about this?

FYI., End of run will bring me back to Saunder's Bay.

Thanks,
Bigdog

Ragged is great. I would stay on the side facing long island since there are numerous rocks on the side facing cow.

A group of cruisers tends to raft on the north-east side of the island, they seem to know exactly were to go and how to avoid the rocks.

On the west side is a large area of shallow area extending out from the beach. I've anchored there a few times, the bottom is sand and small rocks and it less than 10 feet deep quite a way out from shore. There are some big rocks but they are very visible. Smaller boats anchor very close to shore. The beach is signed as being open to the public. I usually anchor in 7-10 feet so I can dive off the boat without hitting the bottom. There is a lot of traffic in that stretch of lake so you will get some wake but it not as bad as the Paugus bay sandbar.

There is a lighted red marker at the tip of Long Island just north of Sandy and across the channel ( to the west) of Ragged. It is quite far out from shore and it is tempting to cut it. Don't. But be aware of its position.

bigdog, I tried to reply to your email but the email address registered on the forum is no longer valid.

Here's my answer to your question about the clearance under the LI Bridge:

Quote:
I'm not sure of the exact clearance but I was also in a 20' bowrider when I went through there in the video. I didn't even need to drop the bimini top. I used to have a 21' cuddy cabin and it fit through will all the canvas up, I just had to lower the old VHF whip antenna.

I'm sure someone on the forum knows the exact clearance.

Enjoy your trip.

I think it depends on the lake level. More clearance now than in the spring.

I can get under with my biminis up, in the spring, with my 25 foot cuddy.

Default Ragged

Ragged is nice. I prefer to anchor on the west side facing Sandy Island. Its shallow, sandy and easy to anchor but I would not raft because of wake action. There are some nice sandy beaches on this side also. There are some docks but not several and they are on the south end of the island. Be careful its shallow, rocky where the docks are but it should be fine if you have a lookout at the bow. There picnic tables also.
