Default Tubing in Weirs channel

Saturday afternoon I picked my son & girlfriend up at Channel marine and proceeded back out to where I was anchored. I was talking and did not catch it till the tube was beside me so I had no time to notice the boat or driver pulling a tube with 2 people on it towards the PB end of the channel.
What kind of ignorant, no, no that’s definitely not it, stupidity provokes someone to pull a tube with 2 people on it thru the channel on a busy weekend afternoon?
Granted they were either teenage or young adults but still could you imagine the amount of chaos that would ensue if one or both fell off while in the area of the bridge?

Default Crazy but...

...although I do not go thru the channel all that much, I think I have seen that scenario at least 3 or 4 times! I just figured it was "stupid is as stupid does"!

I saw it once last year with younger kids on it. They were probably 6 - 8 yrs old.

I also like dodging swimmers in the weirs channel. Not sure why the want to swim around boats with limited control.

I only go through there maybe once a year, or maybe even once every other year, and I have seen it too! Stupid is everywhere!

I have seen this in the Weirs channel, coming through the hole in the wall, going by Trexlers and under the Long Island Bridge, and even going through the Governors Island channel and bridge.

It is definitely not a wise practice at least in my mind, but it appears that people have decided that it is easier to take the kids tubing while out for the normal joy ride.... instead of taking a nice joy ride, and then later or earlier in the day, going out for some tubing...

Of course do to resource issues and other more significant problems that need to be addressed the MP doesn't have the time to sit in these channels and nab some of these people so I am sure it is only going to continue.

Nab them for what? I don't think it's illegal.

Default No it is not

Called MP and although it is not a smart thing to do it is not illegal.
Another one for you can’t legislate common sense.
Some just don’t have it and probably never will.

By nab them I don't mean they have to write them a ticket.... and I know it isn't exactly illegal... but they could pull them over, talk to them about the safety concerns of what they are doing and then while they're at it do a safety inspection....

Remember the Marine Patrol does have the authority just to pull you over and do things like that....

I saw that on Saturday. May not be illegal, but sure lacks common sense.

I thought MP just like any other policing force needs probable cause (or is it just "reasonable suspicion" that a boater committed or is committing a crime before they can pull over, and therefore detain, occupants of a boat...

Sure, the people tubing are being stupid, but MP shouldn't be pulling over boats (and "while they're at it" holding them up longer), unless they have committed a crime. Seems like an un-American to advocate for IMHO.

Well if you think that's crazy earlier this year there were several teens jumping off the bridge into the channel, all the while the parents were video taping this stunt. They were apparently renting one of those cottages along the channel there across from Thurston's. Granted it was on a Friday and boat traffic through there wasn't super heavy, but that's one heck of a jump into water that's about 6-8 foot deep.

Yesterday there were some bridge jumpers at Long Island too. At least that is a little "safer".

In 01 or 02 I saw some people water skiing in the channel about 10 o'clock at night from the Naswa

Just as stupid and unsafe for the people on the tube, as running a snow-machine on a beach to lake. If I were in channel at same time, I'd personally cut their tow line! In tight quarters totally inappropriate. Towing a boat with a problem motor is another matter!
