When I was stationed at Eielson AFB AK just SE of Fairbanks, we would get fantastic light shows. I will try to dig up pics I took. There was little to no light pollution, so even rather faint displays showed up and were easily viewed.

Having spent last weekend in Northern Maine we did not notice anything.
We go out quite a bit at night to let the dogs out too.
