Default pine pollen

I was out in Moultonborough Bay yesterday at about 5:20 PM, looking towards the Ossipees, when all of a sudden, the hills exploded with yellow/green fog. It seemed all the pine trees counted to ten and then they all discharged at the same time.

An amazing sight ... but how do they do that?
