Default The number one reason...

we should keep the current system, is that you feel the taxes. With an income or sales tax you never really get a tax bill. The money either comes out before you see it or it added at the register a few cents at a time. This allows the goverment to keep creeping up the rate and no one really notices.

But when you get that property tax bill in October and it's 35% more than you expected, you get mad. You say things like "What are those SOB's doing with my money", "how come they're wasting it on that", "I'm paying all this money and I still don't get trash pick-up" and best of all "who can I elect to fix this" So people have to get involved in running their own government.

If you take a look at the history of the US income tax, you'll see that the rate stayed pretty low until payroll withholding was introduced, then it skyrocketed.
