This is not unique to WalMart, just about every grocery store fire sale nearly expired meat but with the widespread use of the check in/checkout scanners I think grocery stores are far better at inventory control thus have less overstock and inventory expiration which is great for the bottom line.

Can't fault them to much for that, they aren't doing themselves any favors if they can't turn and burn inventory efficiently.
