Yes...on our tour, we were told things went exactly as you have described here.
In fact, the first time the scene was shot, the boat bounced off the rocks, sending the two stunt men into the water. It came away with nothing more than a few scatches.
They had no idea how solid the construction was, and how much the hull could take.
