I do it the hard way
I bought a kit at the hardware store that contained: snaps (both M&F ones), a holder and a setting tool (much like a drift pin) and a punch. The kits range from $5 to $15 depending on how many snaps and tools. It's easy to use, just mark where you want the snap, punch a hole in the fabric, assemble the parts, place it in the holder and smack the setting tool with a hammer and your done. This method can be a bit of a struggle to use on a large piece as you have to have the holder on a sturdy surface or the floor, but it works...
Rich from the Moultonbough Canvas shop had a nifty tool that looked like a giant pair Vice Grips that held the snap and he just pressed them on without taking the canvas down. I'd have that tool if I did it more than one or two snaps a year.
