Fortunately the bolt broke leaving a half dozen threads so that I may be able to get a new bolt and stack a few washers on it to get it tight.

I was happy to hear you are able to turn a wrench. Many boatowners are not.
Do NOT STACK washers. They
WILL Loosen very shortly.
If you are not comfortable JUDGING the condition of the Bendix..ask someone who is....Of course a marine "Technician" will recommend replacing IT no matter what. Find a friend who has some experience..it doesn't matter if they have marine experience. A Bendix is a Bendix.
