If the sound is a
loud "
throaty-ratchet" sound and coming from a tree adjoining an open area, it could be a Common Raven. My guess is, they're calling out to other Ravens while scoping-out a nesting area of smaller birds.

Oops...
...the Common Raven would be a
daytime call.
