Agree that it is slightly smaller today but still there. It was down to about 6 deg overnight with an early morning period of almost calm.
Last year there was a similar patch of open water south of Welch but it was not anywhere near as cold. However I don't recall this patch of open water in years prior to that when it was this cold.
Could Sauron have actually rekindled ancient fires in an attempt to reforge the ring? If so, even Ice Nine might be thwarted.
