Many times the loons surface from a feeding dive near my kayak. There are always several in Paugus bay and they do not seem to be shy.
I do not think these birds are that timid unless they have their young ones with them.
They are majestic and should not be tampered with but they seem to be able to "fly" under water for several hundred feet. It is exciting when they surface near you.
